During a boxing day Kayak trip in the mouth of the Manning River at Harrington, we were disapointed to find that the ocean was to messy to paddle through the mouth as we had hoped to do.
We however decided to have a look around the sandbar annd found these 'Little Tern' Chicks that have just hatched, the chick on the left is 1 day old and the chick on the right has hatched earlier that morning.
These birds are badly endangered and the National Parks Service is monitoring them and has fenced the area to keep vechiles out.
These chicks have a busy few months ahead of them building up there strength before they migrate north to Asia around Easter.
This picture was taken at a small distance so not as to disturb the chicks or thier mother flying overhead, the younger chick is a little hidden, I was trying to make sure the sky was in the shot, and didnt want to linger to long and disturb the chicks
Info about little terns on the Manning River can be found at: http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/npws.nsf/Content/NPWS+and+volunteers+along+the+coast+roll+out+red+carpet+for+arriving+little+terns |
