Hever Castle, located in the village of Hever in Kent, England, was the seat of the Boleyn family. Originally a country house, it was built in the 13th century and converted into a manor in 1462 by Geoffrey Boleyn, who served as Lord Mayor of London. The remains of the timber dwelling can still be seen within the stone walls of the fortification. Some time after 1505, the Boleyn family moved in. Anne Boleyn and her siblings, Mary and George, although probably not born here, did grow up here for a time, before Anne was sent to the Netherlands and then to the French court for her education from 1513 to 1521. Anne married King Henry VIII of England in 1533, and was later executed with her brother George in 1536. After her father, Thomas Boleyn, died in 1539, the property came into the possession of Henry VIII. He bestowed it on a subsequent (fourth) wife, Anne of Cleves, when he divorced her in 1540, though she probably spent little time there.

The building subsequently passed through various owners, including the Waldegrave family in 1557, and the Meade Waldo family from 1749-1903. During this latter period of ownership, the castle fell into a poor state of repairs and was leased to various private tenants, until it was acquired and completely restored by the American millionaire William Waldorf Astor, who used it as a family residence. The estate is now run as a conference centre, but the castle is open to the public and is particularly well known for its mazes. The only original part of Hever Castle is the magnificent gatehouse.

Hi Stephen. Excellent note.

This is a place I have never visited. Don't know why as it's not too far from where we live. It looks like a fabulous place. Lovely gardens and a very impressive range of buildings.

I like the way you've allowed the place to breathe by providing some spece around the subject. I might have felt compelled to make a panorama out of the shot by cropping the sky out - but I much prefer your interpretation.

All the best for the new year. Kind regards, Paul.

Salut Stephen,
Avec cette image d'archives, tu as encore su trouver un nouvel endroit agréable à publier. Bon travail !
Le POV permet une vision élargie du château et de son environnement paysager.
Greetings from grey and cold Slovakia ;o)

Hi Stephen,
Beautiful shot for this place with picturesque details. The composition is spectacular, colours are very fine. Well done!
Happy New Year to You and your family!

Interesting history lesson Stephen; some of it new to me. That looks like the original gatehouse lurking behind the tree on the right. It looks quite summery still and the people wandering around all add interst to the scene.
Well done
Kath

Stephen,
Great shot of this nice scene! The castle is great and the people add life and a human quality to the shot. The lighting and colors are fine with nice sharpness and DOF. The trees frame the castle helping to lead the eye to the center of the photo.
