Photographer’s Note
This suspension bridge is across a river that is 3 to 4 days walk from Baliem. It is constructed entirely of rattan which is a type palm that grows as a vine in much of the old world. Without these ingenious bridges, travels along the mountains of New Guinea would be very difficult as the high amounts of rain result in numerous rivers that rage down steep mountain sides.
