When I visited the Great Wall at Badaling in 1984, there were far few tourists then than now, plus it was a foggy, misty day. Nowadays this scene would be full of people, but at the moment I took this shot there were only these two. Their angle makes it clear how steep the wall is, which is the point of the photo.
Technical: Kodachrome, digitized. Some levels work to adjust the colors, and sharpness. |

Hello Dan,
You were there a year after us, and I remember the steep climbs along Badelung Pass well. You've presented that vertical element very nicely in this image of the undulating trajectory of the Wall. The fog adds an element I had not seen in person or in photographs.

Hi Dan! Well, that's steep! I don't miss the distance view here, as the fog lets us concentrate on the wall itself. Digitising old photos can be a hell, but the result is quite good here. The stone seems to have a slight green cast, though I've never been there and that could be the real colour... Despite the fog, I'd appreciate some more contrast in the foreground (which would also increase the feeling of indefinition in the rest of the shot).
Nice diagonal, and certainly a different view of the Wall.

Daniel, this is certainly not the image that will make people fall in love with the Great Wall, but it shows an expect that isn't easily to be seen in the general photography of the place. For the first time I realize how steep certain parts of this wall really is. I guess you did the best out of a foggy day.
