Photographer's Note

Another shot, from inside the grounds of the "Gandan Khiid Monastery", in central Ulan Bator. The Tibetan style branch of Buddhism is evident, with the red robed monk at right. I liked the yellow vs blue colour contrast here.

The Russians all but destroyed Buddhism, in Mongolia last century, with the Marxist doctrine of "Religion is the opiate / opium of the masses / people". Many temples were destroyed & many monks executed or sent to re-education gulags.

From Wikipedia:

"It was translated from the German original, "Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes" and is often referred to as "religion is the opiate of the masses." The quote originates from the introduction of his 1843 work Contribution to Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right which was subsequently released one year later in Marx's own journal Deutsch-Französischen Jahrbücher, a collaboration with Arnold Ruge."
