Photographers Note
The cathedral is the supposed place of the baptism of Mieszko I. Built in the second half of the 10th century, it was raised to the status of a cathedral in 968 when the first missionary, Bishop Jordan, came to Poland. Saint Peter became the patron of the church because, as the first cathedral in the country, it had the right to have the same patron as St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. The pre-Romanesque church which was built at that time was about 48 meters in length. Remains of this building are still visible in the basements of today's basilica. The first church survived for about seventy years, until the period of the pagan reaction and the raid of the Bohemian duke Bretislav I (10341038). The cathedral was rebuilt in the Romanesque style, remains of which are visible in the southern tower. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style. At that time, a crown of chapels was added. A fire in 1622 did such serious damage that the cathedral needed a complete renovation, which was carried out in the Baroque style. Another major fire broke out in 1772 and the church was rebuilt in the Neo-Classical style. In 1821, Pope Pius VII raised the cathedral to the status of a Metropolitan Archcathedral and added the second patron - Saint Paul. The last of the great fires occurred on 15 February 1945, during the liberation of the city from the Germans. The damage was serious enough that the conservators decided to return to the Gothic style, using as a base medieval relics revealed by the fire. The cathedral was reopened on 29 June 1956. In 1962, Pope John XXIII gave the church the title of minor basilica.

O, matko! Patrzę na miniaturkę i myślę mikeo byli w Moskwie na Placu Czerwonym. A tu Poznań... No, nieźle! Ale oświetlili katedrę. Choć ten dół to tak trochę jak dyskoteka a nie kościół...

Hello Aga and Michal,
I just critiqued another nightime architectual photo (France) and I commented on how much I love nightime photography. Yours is another beauty! I especially like the way that the low clouds reflected the surrounding city lights and created a warm glow in the sky. Beautiful, bold colors and a great capture of this majestic old cathedral.

Hi A&M,
With all its intrinsicated towers and shapes the cathedral building by itself has lots of architectural appeal, but with that nice lighting added to it it gets turned to an even better artwork, nice night image.

Hello my friends,I was browsing and came across your fine image taken at the most perfect time of the day. The colours are outstanding and the light is perfect. I don't think you could better the quality or the sharpness, they are just outstanding. It's a superb capture, with the lights to floodlight the whole scene.Informative your note,as the B/W version too.

A&M,
what a fantastic scenario. The colors are superb and a real eye catcher, even as a thumbnail. The little detail of that car is a very good one and I'm glad that you included it. Theonly minor thing is the slight tilt to the right that requires a correction.
Amazing shot, I like it a lot!

Hello Aga and Michal,
I read somewhere that this is the oldest church in Poland. However some people disagree with that data. In any case is a beautiful building. You composed the image very well. The coloured lights lit the building nicely, creating a more elegant image. The view from behind is also very effective to show us the size of the church. Definitely a place to visit. Thanks :-)
