Old monastery Saint-Benoit created in 1364 by the pope Urbain V.
Place of the School of Medicine of Montpellier since 1795.
Saint-Pierre cathedral, in place of the old vault of the monastery.

Monastery and also college of teaching of theology, the canon law and the liberal arts. Built of 1364 to 1373 by the pontifical architects Bernard de Manse and Bertrand Nogayrol. The vault of the monastery is set up in cathedral in 1536.

Montpellier was almost two centuries old when, in 1181, Guilhem VIII, lord of Montpellier, authorized any person, without consideration of religion or origin, to teach medicine in Montpellier. Was born thus the oldest Medical school in exercise from the Western world, which became Faculty of Medicine in 1220. October 26, 1289, the pope Nicolas IV, creates officially the University of Montpellier.
A course of anatomy is created in 1340, an amphitheatre of examination of the corpses in 1556, a garden of medicinal plants in 1593, work of professor Pierre Richer de Belleval, first Royal Garden of France, former to that of Paris. With the knowledge inherited the Jews and Arabs, an international reputation is propagated which attracts the students of all Europe.
Not having any clean building until XIVe century, faculty acquires buildings about 1450, becomes the Royal College of Medicine and, into 1795 settles in the old Saint-Benoît monastery, being next to the cathedral SAINT-PIERRE.
The teaching, renovated with the Renaissance, "Rebirth", makes it possible in Montpellier to be a radiant intellectual center. The wars of religion follow, then the revolutionary period which attenuate prestige. By decree, September 15, 1793, Convention destroys universities and schools. The period 1794-1803 restructures and redesigns the teaching of medicine. With the passing of years, acquisitions and the enlargings of buildings, the administrative reorganizations, lead to the integration of Faculty at the University of Montpellier.

Great practioners and teachers attended faculty, among them: Arnaud of Villeneuve, GUI of Chauliac, NOSTRADAMUS, Petrus Hispanus, future pope Jean XXI, Augustin Pyrame de Candolle, Guillaume Rondelet, François RABELAIS registered in 1530, who is graduate doctor of medicine in 1537.
François of LAPEYRONIE, (left statue), 1678-1747, born in Montpellier, surgeon of the king, looked after the sovereigns of Europe, founder of the Academy of Surgery.
Paul-Joseph BARTEZ, (right statue), Paul-Joseph BARTHEZ 1734-1806, born in Montpellier, personal doctor of Louis XVI and Bonaparte, founder of biology.

Hello Joël,
A superb long perspective along this façade. The lamp and the little towers make good 'bookends'. Very good tones and clarity allowing us to appreciate the least detail.

Hi Jöel,

the strong perspective of the this building is the great attraction here. Thos congruent lines lead our eyes to the tower and what it looks the entrance. Colors are natural and well presented. Very successful image!

Salut Joël,
nice architecture with a wonderful texture of the wall. The deep view along the wall and the arches at the end are beautiful. The lantern is well placed, my personal favourite. I like the good clarity and sharpness.

salut joel
un cadrage pas evident pour tout avoir, bien vu sous cet angle, une lumiére un peu forte mais agréable et bien dosée, une architecture qui tire plus sur la religion que la science
