'The Assumption' painted by by Laurent Bassot hangs at the west end of the Cathedral de Notre Dame, Rodez in the département of Aveyron, South West France.

Joël Berthonneau has already posted a fine close-up of this picture on TE here,. (Thanks to mrcrow for showing me how to create the clickable link.) However, I thought it worthwhile to post another composition of the painting, showing a bit more of the surroundings. I hope you agree.

Here is some information on Laurent Bassot and the painting extracted and freely translated from:
Le Wiki de Cantalpassion,:

Laurent Bassot is undoubtedly the most interesting Cantal artist of the seventeenth century. There is not, unfortunately, much biographical information concerning the artist. However, his works can be dated between 1654 and 1683, which suggests a birth date of around 1620 to 1630. In contracts and orders studied by Léonce Bouyssou, Laurent Bassot "master" is referred to as "the principle painter present in the City" (Aurillac). Despite the absence of information about his life, we still have his works, which, although few in number, are of high quality, far outshining other artists working in the area at this time. Four paintings have so far been definitively attributed to Laurent Bassot.

- 'The Last Supper' - signed and dated 1654 (now in the church of Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges in Aurillac);

- 'Saint Francis, Saint Louis and St. Elizabeth' - signed and dated 1657 (church of Giou de Mamou);

- 'Baptism of Christ' - signed and dated 1664 (held in the reserve exhibits of the museum of art and archaeology of Aurillac);

- 'The Assumption' - signed and dated 1662 (Rodez Cathedral).

Our researches indicate that other works exist of the same artist in various locations.

It was in 1662 that Laurent Bassot realized 'The Assumption', which now hangs in Rodez Cathedral. Until a few years ago it was kept in the chapel of the château in Ortholès, a suburb of Rodez. The artwork has been restored and placed in the choir in the cathedral of Rodez, where it is perfectly lit and presented. The painting presents a wonderful portrait gallery of the apostles above which a young Mary stands, supported by angels whose intertwining of legs is reminiscent of Poussin. The introduction of elements of landscape within other of his compositions justifies this connection with Poussin.

Beau cliché bien réussi de cet intérieur d'église que je trouve difficile à réaliser. L'ensemble est d'une grande netteté, le tout est bien cadré.

Bonjour Stephen

Well managed exposure, in tricky, low light level shooting conditions, with an excellent result, & good shadow detail. The centrepiece artwork is marvellous. Good sharpness, & tfs.

Hello Stephen,

You taking this tableau very lovely,sharpness and clarity are very nice.
It's very difficult in any church taking lovely images through the bad light.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice day,
John

Hello,

Bravo et amitiés

Bonjour Stephen,
C'est une belle image situant bien le tableau dans son contexte. Je te remercie d'avoir cité et mis un lien sur ma version plus rapprochée du tableau. C'est un excellent travail.
Bonne journée

Bonjour Stephen,
nice scene from the cathedral. I like how it offers a glimpse from the colorful glass, as well as a view of the decorative painting beside. Wonderful colours and good exposition.
Kind Regards.
Stella

Hello Stephen,
very good exposed painting with the wall and balustrade, wonderful presented in context. And both windows a well done too. I think a bit cropping of both sides for a square view would also be appropriate, but you are right, this would more meet the one from Joël.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hello Stephen
You done well in this posting, lovely colours and clarity in this one.
Surpisingly, it looks as though you took a photo of the wall, then placed the picture on top of the wall, and took another photo to get the nice clear effect you have done.
Nice posting,
Regards,
Rob.

Salut Stephen

Hi Stephen,
Good composition and nice light.Interesting scene. Nice colours and details.
Georg

hi stephen
really good presentation here with the link showing you have covered all the angles
lighting as i critiqued on another forumites shot is critical with works of art and you have concentrated all the exposure on the main item
only by becoming aware through your post i am appreciative of the wealth of artists producing these masterpieces..its not all leonardo and michelangelo doing the business..
cheers
geof

Really Beuatifully done Stephen,
