[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The sacrifice of a kerbauw during a funeral ceremony in Toraja.
This is one of the most important aspects of the ceremony and attracts large crowds to witness the bloodshed.

Depending on the wealth of the family of the deceased up to a few dozen kerbauws lose their lifes in this manner.
The sacrifice of at least one kerbauw is expected even from the poorest families.

Strangely, there is often no money for medication for the ill, but when a member of the family dies (because of lacking medicine for example) the family does everything to scrape the money together for a decent funeral. That can take many years, during which time the funeral is postponed.
