Photographer’s Note

The location of the new airport of Lisbon has being discussed during several decades, but more for the last couple of years, originating highly inflamed political, economical, environmental and social debate.
I'm not an expert, but I guess the option favored by the present government, in Ota, isn't the best (and it seems the most expensive). However, egoistically I'll be happy with that choice, because it is the most far away from my home. I don't understand the common people who want the airport near their homes.
A recent research concluded that perhaps the best option is keeping the present airport in Lisbon (ws) and adding another nearby for low cost flights. This one would be in part of the present base of the Portuguese Air Force (BA6), in Montijo, that you see partially in this picture. The water around is the estuary of river Tejo (Tagus). [Among the tasks of the Air Force based in Montijo there is the maritime patrol (SAR).]
In my inexpert opinion, an even better option would be to remove completely the Air Force from the Montijo Peninsula and to construct a whole civilian airport here. The Vasco da Gama bridge, that connects to Lisbon, is just a couple of kilometers to the left of this picture (i.e., this area is to the right of Aires' photo of the bridge). In my selfish interest, the Montijo option has a great disadvantage: it is the nearest to my home :-(
This low quality photo was taken from an airplane en route from Lisbon to London-Heathrow (the same of my aerial photo of Osterley Park, near London). It is seen from roughly north to south; for an almost similar picture with north on top, click Map: [view] in Photo Information.
Location in WikiMapia: 38.7077498, -9.0267277.
