This railroad tracks are the highest tracks in the whole world for this track width. The altitude is 4818m above sea level (or 15806ft). See here for a small picture of the sign in the place with the original data.
This place is named "Ticlio", it is no city, just the lowest place between the mountains to pass through from Lima to Junin. It has snow from april to october, although this day, at ~1200, not yet. The mountains in the background are in the department of Junin already.
A very cold place and very difficult to breath.
Yes, some plants can survive that nasty weather.
The tracks are nowadays very seldom used for transportation of people since they were privatized, but are used a lot for minerals from the Andean mines to the port of Callao for export.

Very cool shot, Jurgen. The perspective makes this shot. Colors and DOF are just right. I might think about cropping a bit off the top and sides to put it back normal proportions in portrait orientation. Nothing wrong with this crop, but the proportions just seem a little off. Very, very nice.

Hola Jurgen:

Buena foto, me gusta el POV que seleccionaste.
BUenisimas notas.

Un abrazo!

Kikvel

Greatly composed regarding the different colors and masterly designed thanks to a shallow DOF. I love this shot ! Really interesting note on top of that.

Astonishing point of vue and a depth of field givinf a nice effect of length for these rails. Colours are amazing and increase each detail captured in this picture. Very well done !

Fabulous shot, I imagine you had plenty of time to lie down on the track without fear of an express train! The perspective is wondeful and the eye moves from the sharp foreground and then sense the scale of the space the track disappears into. In fact I would say crop a little off the blurred foreground to stop the eye from being distracted there. Very well done, and great notes too.

Very fine image Jurgen with the limited depth of field adding to the sense of tracks continuing over the hill, with sharp details only at a few plants and railroad ties and leaves. The blurred background suits your description of a fairly desolate place. I appreciate the way your composed the image with the point of view close to the tracks. Nice capture.

Ola Jurgen.
Bela foto do caminho de ferro que se perde no horizonte.

The highest peak in South East Asia is about 1 hour drive from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It stands at 4095.2m above sea level. It takes 9 to 10 hours for tourist to sit on the summit or 1.5 hours for mountain runners to reach it. And you have a railroad track higher than this ! Pretty amazing Jurgen.

Good vision with good colours.

Gostei bastante da foto, mas acho que o campo focado poderia ser aumentado um pouco, tentando pegar mais do trilho. Mas as montanhas desfocadas ao fundo deram um efeito muito bonito na sua foto.

very nice POV and a great idea for your composition. I like the way your focus over the rail road, interesting DOF.. good saturated colors with that beautiful "blue" mountain in the background.
Well done

Superbly skilled shot. Great use of dof and the low angle is excellent. The tracks lead the eyes all the way to the hills...

muito legal a profundidade de campo desta foto....e a perspectiva faz os olhos percorrerem todo o trilho.
muito boa!
