This is the palace of the famous king Minos.
MYTHOLOGY: He was the son of the god Zeus ( born in Crete ) and of Europe.
The Minotaure, a bull-headed man was born of the relationship between Pasiphaé, Minos's wife, and a bull sent by Poseidon.
To hide it to the rest of the world, Minos had Daedalus build a palace called " Labyrinth". It was so complicated that nobody could have found his way in it! Fortunately, Ariadne, the Minotaure's half sister provided Theseus with the famous thread , which allowed him to flee after the fight that rid the Earth of such an evil monster.
HISTORY: That contains a lot of uncertainties. The palace was discovered by the British archaeologist, Arthur Evans in 1900, but he seemed to have jumped to conclusions too quickly, and he unfortunately started rebuilding the place in concrete, without enough careful studies.
However, it seems that the Minoean dynasty was a brilliant one from around 1700 BC until about 1400 BC.
It is thought that Minos actually represented a series of kings from the dynasty. One thing is sure, is that it was a brilliant, pacific civilisation based on commerce.
Their reign ended with the invasion of the Myceneans, then the Romans, the Venitians, the Turks...
Eventually, they fought for independence from the 1860's until 1898, when they eventually obtained it.
In 1913, they became a region of Greece.
In WS, a fresco of the bullfighting game, and one of the Queen's apartment.

Bonsoir, mon amie Marie-Louise,
