The North Redoubt and Millet Cross
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The North Redoubt of Fort Niagara, pictured on the right, has two unusual architectural features: Roman arches and doorways in the stone walls coupled with a Chinese pagoda roof. On the first floor there was a powder magazine and on the second floor there were more living quarters for soldiers. The top of the building is open to the elements and housed a cannon. How they managed to get that up there is beyond me! When I was standing up there that day there was a wonderful breeze coming from Lake Ontario. I shudder to think, though, what the conditions up there in the winter might be like.
To the left of the North Redoubt is the Millet Cross, which was built in 1926. This cross was dedicated to the French soldiers of the fort when it was known as Fort Denonville. The winter of 1687-1688 was a particularly bitter one. Disease and starvation reduced the fort’s garrison of 100 men to about 12 survivors. The current cross commemorates a wooden one under which Father Pierre Millet, a French Jesuit Priest celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving for those who survived that terrible winter.
On a clear day with low humidity one can see Toronto, Canada. It is about 30 miles (50 km) across Lake Ontario from here.

Tech Quandary: I wasn't sure what to do with that rock that fell dead center into this composition. Normally I would be tempted to remove it via clone stamp but then I would be destroying the integrity of the scene since the rock had been intentionally placed at that location. I could not find a crop I liked (or an angle with better light that day). Suggestions, workshops are welcome! |

Hermosa composicion Linda.
La simpleza de ese cesped en primer plano, con el mar (con el velero) y el cielo casi en un mismo tono y la inclusion de los arboles y la pequeña construccion son excelentes.
Me atreví a realizar un trabajo, espero sea de tu agrado.
Beautiful composition Linda.
The plainness of that grass in first plane, with the sea (with the sailboat) and the sky almost in a same tone and the inclusion of the trees and the small construction is excellent. I dared to make a workshop, I hope is of your pleasure.

I like this composition.
I thought it was the sea before I read the note.
Nothing wrong with the rock to me...
Well done
A simple but delightful composition to continue your travelogue, Linda. The details of the redoubt and the other elements are well seen, and the sailing boat is a neat detail. Colors and contrast could be boosted a little like Ricardo suggested in the WS. I don't think the rock in the center is disturbing - only if it were as big as the redoubt, it would be ;-)

une suite intéressante de ce lieu historique. Le WS de RAP est très positif ; le format panoramique est bien adapté. Merci de illustrations historiques
La composition est jolie et la note très instructive. Personnellement j'aurais coupé aussi le ciel.
Geat open space feeling. I like the way the building and the tree complement each other and not compete.
