On very busy days you'll even have to queue in order to touch the representation of T'Serclaes dead body, on the left handside of the City Hall in Brussels (Charles Buls street). Indeed, the legend says that it will bring, within the year, a husband to all single women who caress the statute. A variation is that the statute will bring luck to all who touch it.
T'Serclaes is a very famous citizen of Brussels who defended Brussels against Flemish invadors during the 14th century. Mutilated and assassinated for his role in the defence of the city, a monument was erected in his honor, at the place where he died. Since, the popular legend has spread out and not only touching the body will make your wishes come true but also touching the animals in his surroundings (especially the dog)will bring luck.
Persistant assaults from the tourists had somehow damaged the monument and restorations were necessary. Yet, repeated touches have confered to the monument a very nice shiny aspect. |
