[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
One tradition in Finnish weddings is kidnapping the bride. Usually this is done by friends of the new husband, often disguised as gangsters. The bride is taken off scene for a while. The newly wed husband has to fulfill demands of the kidnappers before the bride is returned, sometimes in less sober condition.

I tried to find out how widely known this tradition is. It seems to be known in Eastern Europe and Germany. I'd like to know if it's common in your country.

Hi Kari.

Hahahahahahaha, excellent note explaining something typical of the Finnish people.

It's nice to learn something new.

Rgs, Oscar

PS: In Spain we directly drink a lot... :P

Hi Kari,
In Portugal (and Cape Verde) we are not crazy enough to do that :-)
Like in Italy and Spain (other answers till now) we don't need that to start drinking.
Usually both at the bride's and at the groom's parents homes there are tables with food and drinks, to start before the cerimony. Before mid-day there is the wedding cerimory and lots of photos. And after that there is the big lunch, that continues through the night, with lots of drinks, food, drinks, music, dinks, ...
Curiously, the banquet is called copo-d'água, literally "glass of water", but water is not the most consumed beverage.
Kippis Terveydeksi!

Hello Kari,
First of all, well done for your capture, caught the bride and her kidnapper just in time!
We don't have that tradition here. Wedding ceremonies are mostly held in a big hall, or villa and there's lots of food, drinks and sweets. The reception starts after the wedding mass at church. Thanks for your note, interesting to read. Regards.

Funny post
Great capture , Good shot

Terve Kari,
Although I myself haven't had such an experience (I mean my bride wasn't kidnapped), I know it was common in Hungary, very sometimes, in villages it's a living custom yet.
Good photo, but would even be better if the kidnapper was a UFO (I mean ufonaute). :)
Have a nice weekend, take care, László

Hi Kari,
Superb shot, really funny and spectacular image. I like the splendid details and the impressive composition. Timing is excellent, Lovely moment, indeed. Have a nice Sunday

Terve Kari,
I can confirm this tradition exists as well in Belarus. A scene right in the action and judging by the clothes of the guy behind maybe some local Al Qaeda involvement ;-)
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hi Kari,
Great action shot with excellent detail, light management and framing; you captured the expressions of the two subjects with litle BG interference. The bride doesn't look like she's feigning her distress although the gun is a toy. It's an interesting note as well.

hey, kari! you have a great gallery with many interesting and fine shots. this time i decided to stop by this one since we do have the same tradition in latvia. we even have a few movies (70-ies/80-ies) featuring the tradition. at least one of them, i remember, did not have a very nice ending since the kidnappers were doing it "for real"... nice act on the bride's part in your photo. from her expression one might think she is surprised ;)

thanks for sharing
kristaps

The bride's expression is great - she truly looks dismayed. The kidnapper seems happy though. Nice fill flash without blowing out the whites. I've never heard of this practice in the Philippines or in USA. First time I've seen a glove cut out for the ring finger.
