Photographer’s Note

5 days out of 7, covered sky have dominated my trip in Europe.

So production is not what I wish it could have been, but sometimes, I had good surprise when I was expecting nothing. As you can see on this image, there no direct light, just a white sky, so I was pretty deceived one more day, when I pass in front of this "centurion" who was smoking...

I ask him if I could take his tatoo in photo, but when I recognize the design, I ask him to move and place himself in front of the colosseum, to recreate the scene from his bicep...

The guy was totally lost, because they usually work by pair and make the clowns with tourists, pretending to cut their head with a fake sword for photo op... When I explained that I only want one guy in the photo and actually only his arm, they thought I was a fetichist or a crazy tourist...

It's actually one of my favorite photo of the trip...

Hello André,

Une photographie surprenante ! Un soldat romains ! Tu ne pouvais être qu'à Rome pour cette prise de vue ! L'idée du cadrage en coupant la tête est une bonne idée, il concentre l'attention sur le tatouage est provoque une sorte de tension dans l'image. Cela souligne l'aspect bestial du sujet !

Je vois que tu n'as pas su résister aux charmes tout en muscles de ces pseudos soldats romains qui hantent les abords du coliseum..... Il faut avouer que tu en as tiré une très belle photo de superbe qualité.....je suppose que tu en as été quitte d'une petite obole....

Hi Andre,
Big guy, strong arms, maybe that's the reason they hired him to do this work.
I am glad you had no sunshine here, makes the image more natural without clipping highlights or very dark shadows. In this case the dull grey day turned out to be good for a picture like this. Your tight framing is also something i like, his complete face would lead away the attention from the tatoo.
Rome...never been there, but a must in seeing it.

Hello Andre,
At first I thought your travel was back in time! :-)
You bring a great scene from that cloudy days.
So good the pose and location of the "gladiator" with the colisseum at the back. It's certainly a very good comparison with its tattoo.
I like the strong colour contrast made by the vivid red and the dark core/surroundings.

Cela m'avait échappé que la fin de ton voyage comportait un petit tour dans une machine à remonter le temps! C'est excellent comme photo et j'apprécie d'autant plus ta note qui explique le contexte de la prise de vue que moi je n'oserais jamais donner de tels directives à quelqu'un pour le prendre en photo... surtout s'il s'agit d'un baraqué comme celui-là! Au fait, j'espère que tu n'as pas proposé de lui donner une beigne à celui-là!! ;o))

Bonjour, André. C'est donc lui, le colosse du Colisée. Ce qui me plaît dans ta photo, c'est que tu as réussi à isoler ton sujet. Il n'y a pas le moindre touriste dans le champ, ce qui n'est pas toujours évident dans un endroit pareil. Cela donne à ta photo un caractère intmeporel et on s'attendrait à voir arriver Astéris et son pote Obélix pour participer aux jeux du cirque. Techniquement, la photo est impeccable, comme d'habitude.

Excellent presentation of this tattoo. I like the tight framing, showing only the man's lips, and the way he is flexing his arm. The costume reminds me of a superhero!! There is something about the mood of this photo that really pulls me in...a mixture of fantasy, history, and good photography. :-)

LOL ca commence comme ca et apres ca finit dans des trips a la village people avec de gros malabars vetus de cuir et chaines... ;-)
Un detail bien pris mais qui me semble un peu sombre, faut dire j'ai toujours cet ecran pourri qui fait office de filtre ND 99

An interesting and nice and different choice to crop off the mans head where you have, drawing our eye towards his tatoo. Nice and sharp and the red colour from his cape with the black on the other side also frames the arm well. Great work and nice idea!

C'est vrai qu'ils ont u te prendre pour un pervers! Mais j'ai aussi quelques doutes a l'égard de ce charmant garçon!!! J'aime bien ce cadrage aventureux, mettant l'accent sur le biceps impressionnant de ton sujet.... Lumière, couleurs et textures first class!

Trop bon ça, ça le fait de sentir tant de puissance, de force, elle en dégage un bon paquet ta photo, SPQR, abréviation mythique, ça me fait immédiatement penser au film "gladiators", parfait ton cadrage

La lumiere est bien homagene ton diag devait etre au top non ?
