In this photograph, I have stepped to the left of the gatehouse so as to present a reasonably full view of the structure. The entrance facade features a wide, high arch in the centre, punctuated by small windows. The dome is massive and supported inside by eight overlapping arches with intervening pendentives. I could not find two authorities who agree on the diameter of the dome - suffice that it is in the range of 40 metres.
Aside from the aesthetics of the tomb, I am amazed at what has been achieved, from the perspective of a manager. There had to be a dream to start with and that dream had to be documented in some form, and communicated. The sourcing of appropriate materials and skilled labour would be a major issue, followed by supervision and execution. Construction of the Gol Gumbaz started one day after Muhammad Adil Shah II took office in 1627 and was finished in 1656. All this, and not an MBA in sight! |
