Photo taken of 18th Texas Championship Pow Wow — a two-day Native American Pow Wow competition between colorful tribal dancers contesting yesterday at Traders Village. The event has been organized by the Dallas-Fort Worth Inter-Tribal Association and we can see dancers in full traditional dress at all dance sessions in the following categories: tiny tots, little boys, little girls, junior boys, junior girls, golden age men & ladies, ladies cloth, buckskin, fancy shawl, jingle dress, men's straight, traditional, grass and fancy while tipi exhibits provide visitors with a close-up look at life with this age-old form of portable shelter.
Several hundred Native Americans, representing dozens of tribes from across the United States took part in this celebration of culture and heritage. Dancers in full regalia of feathers, buckskin, bells and beadwork were competing for prize money and awards in eighteen different dance categories. Participants range in age from two-year old toddlers to grandmothers in their 80's.
In June 2005, I even traveled deep into a tribal Kickapoo village over La Santa Rosa Mountain in Mexico to hunt for some pictures of traditional Indian dancing but failed due to our arrival at wrong time. This is the first time I was able to catch some snapshots on such dancing. Please share. Thanks. |
