One of the best known castles of northern Scotland...
....and the reason why I was one month out of TE.
After pleasant time in Scotland I like to be back and see new photos of my friends here
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
The original castle was built in 1220 for Alexander II as a defence against the Vikings. By the late 13th century it had become a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail (later the Earls of Seaforth). In 1511, the MacRaes, as protectors of the MacKenzies, became the hereditary Constables of the Castle.

In 1539 Iain Dubh Matheson, chief of the Clan Matheson died whilst defending the Castle on Eilean Donan island against the Clan MacDonald of Sleat on behalf of the Clan MacRae and Clan MacKenzie.

In April 1719 the castle was occupied by Spanish troops attempting to start another Jacobite Rising. The castle was recaptured, and then demolished, by three Royal Navy frigates on 10–13 May 1719. The Spanish troops were defeated a month later at the Battle of Glen Shiel.

The castle was restored in the years between 1919 and 1932 by Lt. Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap. The restoration included the construction of an arched bridge to give easier access to the castle. In 1983 The Conchra Charitable Trust was formed by the MacRae family to care for the Castle.

It is now one of the most photographed monuments in Scotland and a popular venue for weddings and film locations. It has appeared in such films as Highlander (1985), Loch Ness (1995) and The World is not Enough (1999), and on the cover of Secret Garden's 2000 album Dreamcatcher.

Eilean Donan is the home of the Clan MacRae. In 2001, the island had a population of just one person.

On a clear day it is possible to see the Isle of Skye from the castle.

The Castle is used as the location of the home fictitious of Baron Kirkleven in the BBC mini series "Oliver's Travels (Wikipedia)

Great shot! I like the lighting, which is much more interesting than a daytime shot would have been. The castle of course stands out very well against the dark background, and the foreground lighting shows us some of the surroundings too. Great work!

Bonjour Stanislav
Belle mise en valeur de ce château par son éclairage devant le paysage sombre.Bon choix des paramètres de la réalisation.
Bravo et bonne journée.
Cordialement
Gildas

Hello Stanislaw! Wonderful POV. Amazing colors. Amazing contrast. Very original composition. Good, very good picture. Pozdravy!

Great capture in the blue hour, dear Stanislav !
I like how you managed the light, excellent colours and sharpness.
I added it to the 'blue hour' themes.
Greetings
Aires

Olá Stanislav, excellent night capture of the castle glowing under the dramatic sky. Very good exposure with very effective contrasts.
Best regards,
ricardo

Stanislav,
This is an outstanding night shot. Your have managed to blend both natural and artificial lighting to create a great mood. Your composition is great using the bridge to lead the eye to the castle.
TFS,
Asa

Hi Stanislav,
welcome after your vacations. Your photo is nice and elegant, well it is fitted, and you have made a good work with exposure, that allows us to see with clarity and high quality of image this fantastic castle and its environs, with the aid of the light in FG.
The different tones in the artificial light, and the cloudy and dark sky creates a good Scottish atmosphere, only lacks a ghost in the castle.
Fine work.
Best regards,
Josep

Hi Stanislav,
Beautiful and picturesque scenery :] Nice composition, colours and lighting, well framed.
Georg

Very dramatic light effect, the lighted castle looks impressive on the BG of the somber sky.

TFS,

Andreea

Bonjour Stanislav,
Beautiful image with this cloudy sky (a little vagueness in these clouds, they had to pass fast!), this vagueness makes an attractive bottom for this very sharp castle on the contrary.
Magnificent lighting. I do not know the Scotland but I imagine it as it!
Congratulations
Diane

Hi Stanislav,
You certainly have a stunning castle theme going!! This one is unique for the bit of reflection in the low tide amoung the rocks and the way the dark BG clouds seem almost to shape a shadow of the castle. The night lighting is great; it turns the castle to gold and shows the details of the arched stone bridge leading to the castle. Fascinating note as well.

Hello Stanislav,
Fine blue hour photo of this well-known castle. I like the surreal sky that you obtained through the long exposure. I'm not sure about the lighting in the foreground. It's a tad overpowering. Taking a few steps forward may have been worthwhile. Regards,
Hakan

A ghost castle, it looks marvelous!
Hi Stanislav.
There can be made a good movie story, -:)
Have a nice time.
Evan

Hi Stanislav, Another superb shot of beautiful architecture, the light here is brilliant & captured in the blue hour, the reflection in the water is excellent & a delightful little bridge, great shot, kind regards Wilson.

It is very interesting photo. I very like your composition and very strong colours. Nice composition. I very like your beautiful architecture. Well done.

Hello Stanislav,

This photograph alone would be worth going to Scotland for. It has a special mystique. I can see Lady MacBeth on one of the parapets. The sky is perfect, the structure is beautifully illumnated against that dark, ominous looking sky. I'm glad to see you back, and I look forward to seeing some other photographs from Scotland.

Would you send me your address again; I have the book to send to you.

Warm regards, dear Stanislav,

Bulent

Beautiful lighting. It gives to the night a magic look. Well done.
Best wishes,

Hello Stanislav
I think it' was a windy evening when I saw the clouds.
Very good lights exposure management for the castle.
I think also that is was a good idea to use a spot or light car ? for the foreground.
Cheers.

Woaaaah. I am impressed and take off my hat, in front od thi beauty of composition, of colors, of use of light, and reflections. Absolutely wonderful.

Beautiful shot at blue hour. The hole of blue sky in the clouds and the light on the bottom right hand corner adds judiciously some light.
Well done.

Hello Stanislav,
Best regards.
Daniel.

Hello Stanislav -

I like your image of this romantic castle. This is a completely different perspective of the castle that what I saw. I like that you captured the image right at the end of the blue hour so that we can see some detail in the low lying clouds. There is a good balance between the dark and light in this image. Well done.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Very good night shot, Stanislav, good exposure and great sharpness for such a long shutter speed, the cloud pattern is blurred presumably because of the fast cloud movement...

Cheers

Hello Stanislav,

You excellently captured one of hard capture here. I like wonderful color and texture of castle facade and great effect of blurry sky after your long expose.

I wish Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.

Regards,

Ertugrul

hello Stanislav,

I like the special light in this photo. This landscape and buildings ask for such a beautiful light.
greetings, inn

What a good light! The castle lightening is very well working, and you captured it in the right moment, in the "blue hour". So it looks very dramatic, in a strange atmosphera.
Lovely picture, very well captured

Livia

Hello Stanislav! Great photo, and I might even say this a little spooky but this is probably just my fantasy or I have seen to many movies, either way :))) I really like that the sky has still some color before the night takes it away but I also like the artificial light clicked on giving a special mood to the scene, almost not real ... so I am back to my fantasy world I guess. Excellent work. I like it. Barbara.

Beau travail.
Jacques

Hello Stanislav.
As a McRae, I just have to comment on this one. It is the first night shot I have seen of the castle on TE. Well chosen viewpoint and good exposure of the castle under this very moody looking sky. Excellent sharpness from your shot with the tripod. Well done.

Hi Stanislav,

thank you for your visit to my gallery. I'm always very exited when meeting, to me, a new member of TE. Your dedication to castles is remarkable and your way of presenting them to us is of highest quality. This one immediatelly cought my eye with its excellency of colour work. Light is superbly managed and shows the castle in all its beauty with clearly visible details and structure. Surroundings are marvelous, from the reflection of the castle to dynamic blue sky in its motion. Excellent dedication.

ok, my favorite castle, at night, this deserves at least two points! :-)
terrific nightshot - i did not know that the wonderful building is being lit up at night.
nice use of the 8-second-exposure time, creates a terrific dramatic sky, while the rest is in a kind of spooky atmosphere.
well done & best wishes, thor.
