[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A common enough sight in Rajasthan but the approaching monsoonal downpour made for a more dramatic contrast in colour and light than other times. Another version of this scene is to be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ozpaul/1813117101/ . I'm not sure which I prefer. Amazing how living things survive on these roads...

Like some reviewers I would probably prefer the truck to be a little further in the distance but that would have been a different photo.... we were on the move and this was a fleeting opportunity. I could argue to myself that the truck introduces a dynamic tension into the composition but this is probably self deception. What I do believe however is that this scene illustrates something fundamentally different about the relationship between pedestrians and motor vehicle traffic in India and Nepal compared with Australia. I am not saying this does not apply to other countries, just that this is my immediate experience. In Australia we have herds of sheep and cattle moved along and across main roads and highways and drivers generally respect the need for this. Within limits. However, in Australia drivers generally do not tolerate people and animals entering their sacred tarred space and pedestrians keep as far away as they can and are always watchful. In India and Nepal it seemed to me, pedestrians claim their birth given right to use the roads just as much as the motor vehicles... People walk, sit and squat at the road's edge, seemingly oblivious to the speeding vehicles. In short, here the car rules, there the rights seem more evenly distributed. I would be interested to hear a local's view....

I find this to be a wonderful shot! As you say, the light is so dramatic! Lovely clear images with spots of intense colour, here and there, to draw in the eyes!

This is also a very interesting social document! I have been to Pakistan where I witnessed bullocks being driven along busy main roads! Amazing!

Yes the clouds gathering ahead sure tell you that its gonna pour. I like this light a lot in which the reds and greens become more vivid. I would have waited for the truck to recede to less prominance in the frame and try and do a frame with mostly the shepherds and the sheep. But maybe it was not possible this time.

Hello Paul,
I liked the overall composition very much.The shepherds,the flock of sheep and goats on a busy road surrounded with wild green atmosphere and a darkened sky. I almost felt the wind.

India is a vast coutry and everything is possible here. Here is just one of those. A very common scene of India.
