Autumn Palette Photo

Photographer’s Note

As one climbs steeply out of the St. John River Valley east of Bristol, the landscape becomes rugged, with high hills, deep clefts, and vast river systems interspersed with swampland. This is a recreational paradise, dotted here and there by tiny communities with quaint names like Glassville and Moose Mountain.

The area survives as a largely unspoiled habitat for animals, where hunters and fishermen roam and seldom are tourists seen. The nearby community of Juniper contains a large lumber mill currently closed because of market conditions, its employees well used to being laid off from time to time or working for a new owner every so many years. Juniper is situate on the south branch of the SW Miramichi River, the stream which over the centuries attracted many Canadian prime ministers and American presidents as the prime salmon fishing river in eastern North America.

Technical note: Aside from sharpening and one tweak of contrast in PP with some noise removal in the sky, there was no enhancement by way of saturation or hue.

Hi John,
This one looks like it's going to be a big one for you and it has all the right to be one. Colours are stunning, maybe because of the parts where the sun is shining while the sky has a dark grey toning, i like that part a lot. This one looks even better i think than a clear blue sky which we see so often.

Colorful composition is the word here.
You begin by including the red tree in the corner, an apt intro. to the carpet of color in the valley, going up the mountain.
Good play of the fight between light and shadows on those same colors.
All this topped by expressive clouds, slightly menacing.
On an other note, I had the chance to compare photo taken by the 20D with the 17-85, our lens, and the 17-55,f/2.8, my wife's.There is a world of difference.Ours are softer, while her lens gives very crisp photo, sharper.I have not notice a difference as for noise,the result is good there for both, as the noise reduction is on for all photos

I agree with henk here, the carpet of fall colors is greatly enhanbced by the interplay of light and shadows. Framing is grewat as well with the bit of FG tree detail adding great DOF.

Fantastic panorama of fall colour! What I like most about this is the mixed lighting, with areas of sun and shadow, which always makes a landscape more interesting to me, even making it magical as you can almost see the light moving across the terrain. Excellent work, as always!

Really beautiful, John, POV is very well chosen, there are only trees but the eye is instantly docked by the red one on the left and from there one can contemplate the whole deep scene, the cloud shadows increasing the interest...

However, it is the lighting that 'makes' this picture for me with the alternate swathes of light and shadow under that heavily charged sky. Superb colours and clarity. Excellent photograph work.

I am not sure why one would want to add more saturation or change the hue of fall image that is this outstanding. This is such a pleasing image I would love to have this outside my window and I am sure no work or progress would get done for at least 20-30 days. The foreboding clouds and dappled light really make this image stand tall. Well done on all aspects!

The colours here are wonderful. It seems that the North American continent is the leader for autumn colour. I like the dark clouds coupled with the dappled light. The inclusion of the red tree in the fg was a good idea. Well done

l'ambiance générale de cette composition est une véritable réussite, c’est très beau cette impression d’arrêt sur image et du temps qui se fige, juste le temps d’imprégner son capteur d’une image bien claire ou foisonnent beaucoup de détaille, et comme le dit ta note il y à beaucoup de place pour se promener sans être vu, bien amicalement
