[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Volubilis (Ar. Oulalili) is today a ruin in Morocco not far from Fes, but in Roman times it was the capital of the province of Mauritania, filled with rich merchants' homes. It may even predate Rome; the Carthaginians probably founded it in the III century BCE. In 1997 it was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Volubilis sits in one of the most fertile areas of Morocco, one of the "breadbaskets" of the Roman Empire, and the area still feeds Morocco, as can be seen by the fields in the distance.

Even after the empire declined, Volubilis continued to be inhabited until as late as the XVIII century. After that, it appears that its ruins were quarried for building materials at Meknes, one of Morocco's capitals. Even so, what is left of the ruins is still impressive, and gives a sense of what the city must have been like in Rome's heyday. There are still some fantastic mosaics there (though some have been removed to Rabat), and I will post some pictures of them.

Hello Daniel..Ruins have a unique impact on every individual..in person when touring..it brings about a special connection to what had happened centuries back..we inspect,we learn and then take a shot to capture the essence...this one is a perfect example

Good composition with lots of depth and very nice green color in the back. I lkie very much the wide space. Well seen and done.

I like the verticality of columns in opposition with this big background green plain. It is very beautiful.
