[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo was taken during an ascent of Mount Whitney's Mountaineers Route. A few days before, my friends and I were in a high mountain basin with sheer rock walls on three sides when one of them asked, if I had had ever seen one of the rock sections break loose. I told him I had not, although I had seen large cornices of snow break loose. We looked around at the rocks looming over us thinking about what it would be like to have one come crashing down. Not a pleasant thought! I blame my friend for what happened next.

Two days later while making our ascent, I had had my camera out to take some pictures of the water seeping out through the rocks from Iceberg Lake when I heard the rock fall. I was so busy gawking that I practically forgot I had my camera in my hand. I quickly framed and shot, catching the impact of the chunk of rock the size of a house. Notice the wave of debris created by the impact. In answer to my friend’s question, I’m glad I was across the valley from the point of impact, as being in the impact area would not be healthy.

Hi Chris,
Glad you were no closer to theat rockfall. Impressive detail and framing - how on earth did you get your camera out in time to capture that?

Okay so the shot is a little shaky but I think it adds to the realism. Talk about F8 and be there. You caught this very well considering. Well done Christopher.

Chris,
This is an amazing capture! It is very difficult to capture such unplanned natural events. You showed great presence of mind to remember you had a camera in your hands. This makes still photos with tripods seem easy!

Hi Chris, Welcome to TE. Well timed shot to get this rockfall into the frame as you have done. The moment is just right. Good clarity although you were likely at least shaken by what you saw. TFS. Murray.
