This is the most beautiful of all the modern Roman fountains. Built in 1888 following the designs of Alessandro Guerrieri who placed four chalk lions around the large circular basin. These were then replaced in 1901 by four bronze groups by the sculptor Mario Rutelli which represented the Lake Nymph with the swan, the River Nymph riding a river monster, the Ocean Nymph, known as "Oceana", on a wild horse which symbolises the breakers, and the Underwater Nymph, lying on the back of a dragon. In the centre is the "Glauco" group, carved by the same Rutelli and added in 1912 substituting another sculpture, and representing the dominion of man over the forces of nature. It was moved to the gardens in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele because it did not please its purchasers.

E' la più bella tra le fontane moderne di Roma. Costruita nel 1888 su progetto di Alessandro Guerrieri che attorno alla grande vasca circolare pose quattro leoni di gesso. Questi vennero poi sostituiti nel 1901 dai quattro gruppi di bronzo dello scultore Mario Rutelli che rappresentano la Ninfa dei laghi con il cigno, la Ninfa dei Fiumi, su un mostro fluviale, la Ninfa degli oceani, detta "Oceanina", su un cavallo selvaggio simbolo dei marosi, la Ninfa delle acque sotterranee, sdraiata sul dorso del drago. Al centro il gruppo del "Glauco", scolpito dallo stesso Rutelli ed aggiunto nell'anno 1912, sostituì uno precedente, che rappresentava il dominio dell'uomo sulle forze della natura e fu portato nei giardini di piazza Vittorio Emanuele, perché non piacque ai committenti.

E poi è una gran bella immagine, la piazza è molto ben valorizzata con questa buona luce limpida e la prospettiva che mette nel centro la scultura.

Bella Giorgio, ne ho postata una dallo stesso punto tanto tempo fa e mi ricordo tutto il tempo che ho dovuto aspettare per farla senza macchine in primo piano, anche qui tanti bei ricordi per me, due o tre anni fa quando andavo all'università..

This is a fine capture of this fountain and square. The balance and symmetry in this photo is great. You have created nice contrast with one side of the background in sunlight and the other in shadow. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail.

Greetings Giorgio.
A beautiful architecture shot with pleasing symmetry. I really like the way you chose to use the pedestrian crossing to lead the eye into the photo. The light and shade on the buildings is well captured, and the cars and people add life and touches of bright colour. I think your cropping has made this view very pleasing to the eye. The fountain is beautiful, and the perspective is achieved by seeing the buildings behind, beside the road as it continues on on the other side. Very nice photo and good notes.

Hi Giorgio,
A good addition to your Rome fountains theme with a wide view on the square and buildings around. Exposure and colors are fine. A good symmetry but one side sunny and one side in the shade...

I like this imposing capture from Rome. There are several landmark buildings in Sofia, whose architecture is influenced by those buildings: the Central Universal Shop, The Presidency and... the former Communist Party House;-)

bello l'effetto di luci e ombre contrapposte ( il palazzo è in ombra sulla sinistra mentre la fontana è in ombra sulla destra ). Nitidezza giusta.

Yes, this fountain is really beautiful. And behind you there is this beautiful Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli with a quite different interior and a huge organ!
Perfect symmetric photo showing the entire big fountain. Great exposure. Interesting note.TFS
