Photographer’s Note

As you may know speed and time are closely related to each other, and with this photo, I'd like to show that speed and time are also related to railway.
The different regions of France had different time references around the country until the second half of the 19th century. It is with the development of railway lines, offering the possibility to travel across the country at speeds never seen before that the clocks around France had to be synchronized. Officially, it is on march 15, 1891 that the time of Paris became the time of reference for all the railway stations of the country.
That clock, at the Gare de Lyon (opened in 1849) at Paris seem to impose that official time to everyone, and especially to those famous high speed trains that are today fast enough to compete with airlines between the main cities of France.

This is the first of a series of three images I will post about speed (and railway).
