Photographer’s Note

Meeting again my friend Hülya after some months, we went along for a walk in her area of Ürgüp to meet other cave dwellers :

... as much as Hülya is a very tall woman, Fatma is very very tiny, me being between the two - see
Hülya and Fatma side by side.

Fatma is living with her husband who is a day labourer and her 20-years-old daughter in a 2-roomed cave house without any water or electricity connection, not paying any rent to the owner who lives in Istanbul.

Nonetheless, she is proud of her little garden, with several apricot trees and splendid vegetables, specially great peppers, giving water everyday, transported with great pain from downtown.

Her house is basic of course, but it has also a history, with parts dating from the occupation of Greek people who had lived there for generations. Here is a view of the inside of the room on the left, with the open door.
