Under the Rain Photo

Photographer’s Note

This picture was cpatured while I was stucked by the rain. I could not go further since the road was so slipery. So I had the chance to take a few pictures and this is one of them. I felt so mad at the raining that stopped from going further, but I also was glad to have some pictures.

Infrastructure in Cambodia is very bad, esp. the road condition. When it is raining, it is impossible to travel.

Most people in a village ride a bike as their transportation. Most people now got their own motocycles.

Hi Sothy,

Very nice composition with the bicycles placed all across the frame. the rain is clearly visible, actually looks like a blanket of water. TFS.

I have suffered badly from the Cambodian roads, Sothy. But flooded or washed away roads do give an opportunity fro taking pictures. This is a very typical Asian scene of farm workers struggling home in the rain. I like what the rain does , it softens and blurs the colors and creates a sort of mist in which or heroic cyclists seem to be floating. They are grouped nicely, three two one, to make a good pattern accross the frame. regards kevin

Very nice image of the bikers on the rain. Such a great capture to get them together this way. There is a beautiful atmosphere for the viewer even if it is different for the guys on their bikes.

Marvelous picture Sothy, really great feeling vehiculated through this shot and this heavy mounsoon rain, the street is totally covered up by rain, must be a particular moment to live, i've never seen such a heavy rainy moment, even if i come from a place in France where it rains almost each day ;)

This is great! Maybe it appeals to me so much since I just walked home during a very heavy downpour, and I'm also soaking wet! :-) I love the capture of all the water coming down, and the horizontal framing. The people are caught at the right moment, and it is amazing to see how they can still keep riding depsite all of the mud beneath them.

A great picture that resume what Cambodia can be in one shot. And that resume too that Cambodian people are living with and below the rain (in the rainy season). A people that are living with the water.

I never been to Cambodia but I've heard about the road conditions and especially during the rainy season! The frame is well filled with this cyclists line-up under the strong rain. I like, as well, to see in BG the banana leaves adding a touch of color to the scene.

This is a very nice and definitive picture. It reminds me of the Philippines where many people use bikes and tricycles to go around. You have taken the right exposure to give details to the images inspite of the rain.

Hi Sothy,
erh... what to say... I've long admired Dutch people for their ability to get around on bike regardless of weather conditions... this photo sets the mark definitely a lot higher, it's quite rare to see pictures taken in such conditions so this one has a definite appeal coming from that "something different" dimension, and good quality as well, plus it tells a lot about (difficult) living conditions, I hope you had adequate protection for your camera and lens !

I love the detail of the guy who's put a shirt over his head. I'm not sure it's really keeping him dry. The little boy on the right seems to have better common sense: don't bother to put anything on your head, just get on!
Hope you were able to protect your camera from this downpour when you took the picture.

This is a wonderful photo, Sothy, and it definitely looks very wet :) I actually already opened it while working a while ago. I am just discovering your pictures to my great joy. I think that it is no wonder that this picture has gained so many points, a record.. You can get wet by only looking at it, it represents the monsoon rains so well, everything works perfectly. But what about your camera ?

Sothy my friend,
I saw this one on your mainpage, i was impressed by it. Normally people avoid traveling in the monsoon season but see here what kind of pictures you can make...stunning, absolute stunning..!!!!!
When i look at it it is really raining, only the sound is not there, but it has a very high point of realism in it. And also your crop and presentation is well thought...i really like this one. An extra green star..!!!
I will be in Cambodia next March (beginning of the month coming from Vietnam) and although there is no rainy season, i hope to make some nice shots that come close to this one...when i am lucky.

THIS is an extraordiary take of the Monsoon. A great movie panorama about the yearly asian event.
There's a special cambodian way of riding a bike it seems, riding quite slowly, slower than vietnamese or thai who ride their bike steadily, here they seem to catch up with their balance at all times, like a man on a wire. Struggling their way through uncomfortable and wet trails...
A few chakra worn around the neck complete the typical cambodian feel to it.
