Photographer’s Note

The Fly Agaric Amanita muscaria is the famous white-spotted red toadstool beloved of children's book illustrators.

They are widely known as one of the few poisonous fungi in the UK, but it is not generally realised that this is because they are in fact strongly psychedelic. Eaten raw, they cause stomach cramps, hallucinations1 and, possibly, death.

In some parts of Europe they have long been associated with magic and legend. In Lapland, reindeer regularly get high on them and are seen to leap around, giving rise to the story of Santa's flying reindeer. Lapps have a custom of deliberately feeding them to their deer, and then collecting and drinking the urine because most of the toxins are filtered out by the reindeer's digestive system.

Hi Jaap,
Perfect composition with the amanitas in foreground, giving them a good protagonism as in the fairy-tales. Your POV does that they seem to be much bigger, and only a goblin of the forest is absent to complete this scene.

j'aurais dis que ta photo est parfaite seulement voilà un détail me gène , la voiture en haut à gauche .
Pourtant l'idée de base est bonne .Il aurait fallu recadrer , changer de point de vue ou bien demander au propriétaire de la voiture de la changer de place .

Yes, it's that time of the year again, where these (and most other types too) of muchrooms are out. Wonderful shot, really capturing the size and colour of these mushrooms. I like the fact that one appears to have a huge bite taken out of it - maybe someone getting high? Great work!

Excellent POV pour mettre en vedette ces beaux champignons (j'espère que ce n'est pas toi qui les a grignotés quand tu étais dans ta position de prise de vue.....)et très belle profondeur de champ. Sans la voiture , c'est plutôt mieux mais tu aurais peut-être dû éviter de laisser les deux moceaux de végétation l'un au dessus de l'autre.

Very clever composition, and the title fits perfectly. I like the saturation which leads to a pleasant red-green contrast. The car in the shadow is not a problem, it is wel underexposed. Sky and clouds have a good depth, they add a nice background to a great shot.

that shot is so spetacular that even that car is not bothering! I never saw that mushroom naturally in nature, but during my botanic studies a true sample. You're a lucky guy not only to have seen one but 7 positioned well and with great light conditions.

Another perfect shot in classic "Carper" quality. I have never seen large fungi like this except in artwork often enclosed in children's books. Incredible detail of this outstanding subject and the presentation has excellent colors and clarity. A very fine piece or work, jaap, and TFS. Gerald

a well captured fairy tale it is jaap! good choice to get on the ground... i was thinking of a similar shot involving pumkins last weekend, but decided not to get dirty in the end. now i regret it :)

p.s. i agree, the car is a bit of a nuisance in such a composition. but again, if you waited longer for the car to take off, the light migh have changed and the light is perfect as is in your composition.

This photo (the version without the car) makes me think of some Enid Blyton books that I've just finished reading to my sun. I can just imaging pixies playing around these toadstools. Your low pov makes them so dynamic and it's funny to see the chunk taken out of the one in the foreground. Nice play of light and shadows too.

Tu les as trouvés ces amanites tue-mouches ! En bordure de route pour une composition magistrale, une rangée d'arbres, un éclairage solaire juste ce qu'il faut et un ciel à la Carper ;o). En plus tu t'es mis "au ras des pâquerettes" pour faire tes prises de vue.

Wow, dat is nu echt eens iets unieks wat je hier niet veel tegen komt! Die zwammen zijn schitterend en inderdaad een herinnering aan al de sprookjes waar we mee opgegroeid zijn. Hello Jaap,

you have so many fine images that it was difficult to choose one but I settled on this one because of two things; the perspective and the wonderful colours. Great dof and fantastic light makes it a favourite, though my favourites bin is full I will make a special theme soon to put it in. It's a superb, imaginative capture Jaap, well spotted (excuse the joke!)

What a fantastic photo, my Friend! Absolutely brilliant, with or without the car. So many Fly Agarics... like an illustration from a fairytale-book. Here in Hungary if there's so many fungi on a given small area from the same specie(like this case), it's called "witch-spin" or "witch-circle". And yes, sometimes it is / was eaten: for example the Finnugor shamans had eaten 7, 2x7 or 3x7 pieces before "meeting the Gods" and after the seanse they had drunken milk to stop the effect - history books write it worked.
Magnificent image, one of my faves here. Hats off.

Beautiful but poisonous view! Did you photoshop all those decorative mushrooms, or did so many grew in one place? About the poison, it is said that the vikings used them as a drug. (But don't try, they are probably very dangerous for the kidneys.)
