| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| Before I went to Leh, I sent my granddaughter some Rajasthani sparkle, anklets, bracelets, mirror top, skirt, pointed shoes, etc. In India all packages are sewn shut in white cloth by a tailor. They sew a bag the size of the object, by hand or machine, then sew it shut. Next they melt wax and drop colored globs on the package seams. The tailor is melting the sealing wax with a candle, onto the package. This is to show if it has been opened enroute. Then it is stamped with a seal to make a design on the warm wax. It cost me 50 rupees to have it sewn. The package got to the USA in around 11 days airmail,(1400 rupees, ugh). (When I sent home my winter clothes once from southern India, it took 6 months by sea). My grand daughter was very happy and jangling in her anklets and finery! (100 Indian rupees was 41 USA cents then). This shop has at least 4 tailors, sitting on the floor with hand turned machines, and a couple of foot power ones near the door. It is solid cloth, and people almost. They have excellent looking clothes for men hanging up for sale. |

good work here, I like the light, it glows with wonders and the candle looks hot too, very good way to send things by post using this method, so you know nobody has opened your letter
Well done

truly fascinating.
Must be hard to open such a work of art!
Your story really makes this picture! At first I thought it was some kind of decoration of textiles (like the 'batik' method in Indonesia). Thanks for sharing this Indian way of sending packages around the world. It must be very nice to receive a parcel which is sealed like this.
Your photo perfectly illustrates the story you are telling, Gloria. Nice light from the candle held against the piece of wax. I never heard about this "package-sewing" before - if I ever were to receive one of those I guess I might just keep it as a piece of art for a while before opening it.
a very interesting note and a nice shot. They don't take any chances, eh? You have captured this scene very well, Gloria.
