Photographer’s Note

Autumn is in full swing here in the Wasatch Mountains, although you can't really see it in pine forests such as this one. Saturday morning I went up to Mt. Timpanogos and drove along the Alpine Loop stopping at various spots until it got too overcast (it ended up raining most of the rest of the day).

This one was taken about an hour after sunrise. Believe it or not, at sunrise there were no clouds, and about 45 minutes later it was almost entirely clouded over. Fortunately it cleared up enough for me to get this and a few other shots. The clouds were great as well because they created light and dark areas, helping with the sense of depth.

Besides the polarizer, I used my new ND grad (which seems to be an improvement over the last one--we'll see).

The first thing that really strikes me about this is the lighting - coming from the side allows us to see all of the trees individually instead of a big green blob with no detail. Fantastic colour too, and I like the positioning of the mountains, which gives a nicely balanced frame and good sense of depth. Excellent work!

This is an area in Utah I'm not too familiar with, but from what I see on your pictures absolutely worth visiting in the future.

the lighting you've captured is simply amazing and the result is a fantastic 3D effect throughout the picture. I'm amazed by the quality and quantity of details you managed to get and the colours and dof are great too!

Nice composition, lovely light and beautiful colours and texture.
Did you blend two exposures here? or is this HDR.
It looks so well exposed.

Hi Clark,

Another great shot with amazing lighting! I also love those few red trees in the midst of the greenery! Great POV with beautiful layers and an amazing sky above! Excellent work, Clark!
