This picture is the follow my new serie. It was taken in a old delapitated building on the bank of Bangkok's Chao Phraya River, the old Custom House... A fascinating and a rich history, a master piece of architecture, left alone to the hands of time... I will try to present you this building the best way I can, with a different point of view.

The complex was completed in 1890. In Bangkok Time Guidebook, published in that year, there was a statement commending the Customs House Complex as one of the smartest group of buildings in Bangkok. the supporting buildings included a central pier for loading and unloading, a guardhouse, goods holding structure, office, warehouses, residences for officers, fire pump, mess hall for chinese workers, cranes and good carrier system on rails, etc. Also mentionef in the same book was the fact that, during the celebration of the King's birthday, the hall in the Customs House was used as the ballroom lavishly decorated with huge mirrors, chandeliers, paintings, etc. Given the above account, the place must have been very vibrant and cosmopolitan in its hey day. Coollies, sailors, traders, officers, foreign dignitaries had all shared the same premises whenever the situations demanded and occasions arised.

In 1897, there was a photo of the old Customs House taken by a passenger on board in the Royal Fleet arriving Bangkok after Rama V's visit to Europe. The photo showed the place decorated with tents, banners, and flags and populated with formally dressed officials and diplomats standing attentively in line to receive the beloved King back from the long journey. Also, the picture demonstrated the conditions of Customes House buildings at that time very well.

Hello,
Yes, it looks old and shabby. I saw similar sights in India. Things look different in some other world.

Salut Vince !

Et bien en voila un beau B/W et le sujet est parfait !
J aime bcp la perspective des portes et la presence de la petite famille au premier plan.

Bravo

Marvelous point of view. Lightning is great and i find the black and white medium perfectly adequate to the photo. I must say it compliments a lot the shabbiness of the place.

The ongoing corridor is great... it gives a good idea of how big must be the place. whilst the people portrayed in the photo gives it life. Hinting at housing conditions some families live in.

Excellent work. really!!! :)

cheers vanessa

Vincent,
A truely a memorable frame here...
the time, the history, the present & the life all mingled together in one frame!
I am fascinated by the emotions the B&W evokes.
Thanks,
Prem.

Bravo, Léonie

This is awesome Vincent
Not the just the normal snapshot here!
It definitely deserve more attention than what it has received so far.
The light and the state of this old building, along with the very natural pose of the people in it.
And to top it up, there is all these open doors all the way through the picture. I love it.
Harry

Bravo !
