Portbail est une commune française, située dans le département de la Manche et la région Basse-Normandie.
Ses habitants sont appelés les Portbaillais.
La commune de Port-Bail possède deux églises :
Notre-Dame, classée monument historique, se distingue par son clocher fortifié couronné de créneaux et de mâchicoulis du XIe siècle, vestige de la guerre de Cent Ans. Cet édifice religieux occuperait l'emplacement d'un ensemble monastique du VIIIe siècle, qui dépendait de l'abbaye de Saint-Wandrille. Lieu d'expositions et de concert d'avril à octobre, visites guidées.
L'église Saint-Martin (de Gouey) du XIIe siècle et du XVe siècle est l'actuelle église paroissiale depuis 1909.
* Cinq voies romaines arrivent et partent de Port-Bail, ce qui laisse penser que ce port était une escale de la route maritime de l'étain, qui reliait ainsi la Cornouaille au bassin méditerranéen.
* Vestige de l’époque gallo-romaine, le baptistère de Port-Bail a l’originalité d’être hexagonal. Il fut construit au VIe siècle, au début de la christianisation du Cotentin. C’est le seul baptistère retrouvé au nord de la Loire et le seul hexagonal en France. Le baptême par immersion y était pratiqué. Il fut transformé en chapelle funéraire au XIIe siècle. Des ossements y ont été trouvés, et d'autres vestiges.
* Le pont de 1873 menant vers la plage est également intéressant puisqu'il est composé de 13 arches ce qui est souvent signe de mauvais présage. Les jours de fortes marées il arrive que le pont se trouve au ras de l'eau, ce qui donne l'impression de marcher sur l'eau.
* La légende désigne la ville de Port-Bail, comme le cadre de l'arrivée miraculeuse, par voie de mer, des reliques de saint Georges en terre de France.
Portbail is a common Frenchwoman, located in the department of the English Channel and the Low-Normandy area.

The commune of Port-Lease has two churches:

* Five Roman ways arrive and start from Port-Lease, which lets think that this port was a stopover of the sea route of the tin, which thus connected Cornwall to the Mediterranean basin.
* Vestige of the Gallo-Roman time, the baptistry of Port-Lease has the originality to be hexagonal. It was built with the Life century, at the beginning of the christianization of Cotentin. It is the only baptistry found in the north of the Loire and the only hexagonal one in France. The baptism by immersion was practised there. It was transformed into funerary vault in XIIe century. Bones were found there, and other vestiges.
* The driving bridge of 1873 towards the beach is also interesting since it is composed of 13 arches what is often sign ill omen. The days of strong tides it happens that the bridge is with the short-nap cloth of water, which gives the impression to go on water.
* The legend indicates the town of Port-Lease, as the framework of the miraculous arrival, by sea, of the relics of George saint out of ground of France. |
