The ancient town of Kilkenny is an absolutely fabulous place to stop in and wander when touring Southeast Ireland.

Kilkenny once rivalled Dublin in importance and many of its historic buildings have been preserved including the 12th-century castle pictured here. Perched above the Rive Nore, the castle really commands your attention when you're strolling through the town.

The castle was built in the 1190s and occupied right up to 1935. Highlights of a tour include the library, the wood-panelled dining room and the Chinese bedroom. While the castle grounds have shrunk over the centuries, there are still some very nice French Classical gardens with terraces opening onto a woodland walk and pleasant rolling parkland.

Kilkenny is also known as brewery city and hence is a paradise for drinkers. The small town hosts over 80 pubs!

About the photo:
This photo was taken shortly before some rains rolled in. You can see the heavy clouds but I was lucky to catch a little blue sky. Not pictured but directly to my right is a very nice fountain featuring a more classic shot of the grounds. But it's also a very popular view and thus there many people lingering around the fountain for some time. I eventually did get that shot and I hope to post that one eventually too.

Regards,
Doug

Hi Douglas
Very nice shot, great colors and great detail flowers and castle too. Good DOF. Thank for sharing.

Doug,
I see, you made a real castle tour through Ireland and after your present series we won't just get to see them all, but we also will know the history of each of it. Just kiddin', keep going. The quality so far is outstanding and I see that you're mastering the transition to digital without any major problems.
Your composition with the good balance between the foreground and background is really nice, altough I have the impression that the red roses are presented somewhat with too much contrast. However, that might be a personal thing because I also see that some took it as a favorite shot what certainly is quite deserved!
Regards, Peter

Hi Douglas,
Very good picture, to my I usually like to mix the gardens with the monuments, and not to center them in single first plan. This picture also has a perfect sky. Congratulations.
Lourdes.

Hi Douglas,
I like this shot. The foreground and mid image spots of red flowers lead into the beautiful castle - the sky and clouds add the final touch of a very fine image. Great work and TFS. Gerald

We visited Kilkenny only fleetingly and always planned to go back but never did. I like the way you composed this showing only part of the castle, but from a low POV with the beautiful red roses in the fg. Despite the impending rain the sky looks quite pleasant and is a good feature of the overall image.

Hi Douglas
Like rose petals thrown to honour a king, these red flowers pay tribute to castle that reigns up-hill!
No, I did'nt smoke herbs!!
Best regards.
Robert

Hello Doug -

I have wandered this Butler family castle's grounds several times. It is so photogenic with the lawns, the flowers, and the river Loire. You have selected one of the nicest compositions with the bright red roses in the FG the castle in the back and the ever present threatening skies. Everything is spot on the money Doug. Well done!

Thank you for sharing and reminding my how much I miss Ireland.

John

Hi Douglas,
Wonderful scene, very nice POV. Beautiful composition with flowers, castle, details and the colours. Well done my friend...
Best regards...

Hi, Douglas. The red flowers in the foreground give a very good depth to your shot and contrast very well with the grey stones of the castle. The castle also stands well out against the sky. Maybe I would have chosen for a landscape format here to give a more general view of the castle.

Hi Douglas,

I love the color combinations .. I love the way the reds lead me through the image past the vibrant greens and up to the castle. Beautiful.

take care,

John
