Symi belongs to the Dodecanese islands complex and lies 24 nautical miles NW of Rhodes and 255 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus. The highest point is Mountain Vigla at 616 metres. The island is very close to the coast of Asia Minor, just 5 miles from Alopos. It is not a very big island, only 67 square kilometres. The majority of the land is covered in rocks.

The history of the island begins in the ancient times when some of its names were Kirki, Aigli and Metapontis. The island got its current name from the nymph Symi, who according to greek mythology married the God of the seas Poseidon and brought to life Hthonios who became the leader of the islands inhabitants.
Homer mentions Symi in the Heliade, for its participation in the Trojan war, headed by the Symiot King Nireas.
Later in history, Symi was conquered in 1309 by the knights of St. John. Then a period of prosperity began for the island with the development of shipping, sponge commerce, boat building and other crafts. In 1832 Symi was found under the Turkish dominion which was followed in 1912 by the Italian dominion.
Symi confronted poverty at that time: the replacement of sailing with motor ships occurred, sponge diving decreased and world war II begun resulting in a greate migration wave of Symiots abroad.
From 1943 when the Italian dominion ceased and onwards, Symi changed hands several times between the English and the Germans, with the English taking over the island for the third time in 1944. On May 8th 1945, the Germans signed the treaty of the Dodecanese surrender, while on April 1st 1947, the British military command handed over his rights to a Greek one.
At last, it was on Symi that on March 8th 1948 the Protocol of integration of all Dodecanese islands to the Greek state was signed.

Hello Georg,
A very nice composition of these colourful houses all packed together and receding up the hill. The curving line of the bridge provides a good lead-line whilst the couple add a sense of vitality to the scene. Very good lighting and tones and superb clarity.

Hello George,
welcome from your vacations in Greece!,I hope to were a pleasant trip.I have seen a lot of photographs of Simi but first time with the incorporation of this bridge with the pair walking on her.The bridge give a great depth of field and you captured it from a nice POV.Excellent the sharpness and the clarity. The contrasted colours and the light are so vivid.Very informative your note too.Well done George.

Hi George.
Great POV capturing this nice light over the city. I like the intense blue of the sky and the relaxing atmosphere.
Very well done!
TFS.

Nice picture but you always remain outside the scenery and don't get involved with the reality you portrait and live . You are a master for postcards without risks

Hi George,
an appealing village scene under nice light, I like the many houses so close to each other and showing a wide array of colors, the small boats add maritime context and the couple some animation, since they do not look so local we also gather it's a place where one can enjoy holiday there, which you did apparently !
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

George, great shot, detail, color and life it is really inviting. Great capture but very well seen.

Bonjour George,
Regards.
Daniel.

George,
This is a very nice capture! Your composition works well using the walkway to lead the eye into the photo. The walkers add a sense of motion and direction to the photo. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail. The wonderful blue sky adds a nice backdrop for these multi colored houses.
TFS,
Asa

Hello George,
I like the point of view chosen at the exit of this round bridge. The architecture of this village points out old Greece. The colors are beautiful. The realization is perfect. Felicitations
Have a good day

Hi George,

Relaxing composition, the water, the calm boats, the couple walking slowly by the hands... and very colored too, the houses in the slope are fantastic. Great POV you has chosen, and very well in my opinion the narrow band for the sky! Beautiful!

Hi George,
The warm hues and tones here are quite enchanting, and i especially like the shadow and lighting effects. The couple strolling towards us warms and enhances. The clarity of detail is great for the facades of the buildings, and the little boats on the right help balance the frame. A very fine capture...later.

Dear George
With the inclusion of the bridge, you've built in good depth in the shot. The bridge curves it's way into the frame, providing strong lead lines. Excllent colours of the facades of the houses. A very good note too. Well done!
Regards
Angshu

Love those houses on the face of the hill.
Grear that you included that couple, too.
