Photographer’s Note

In the 11th century, Abbot Oliba founded a small monastery beside the Chapel of Santa Maria. The site gradually increased in importance, becoming an abbacy in the 15th century.

From 1493 to 1835, a period when the monastery underwent great reforms, growing and increasing in splendour, Montserrat was part of the Valladolid Congregation. The French War (1808-1811) and disentailment in 1835 brought destruction and abandonment, but restoration soon began once more (1844), interrupted briefly during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), to convert Montserrat into the monastery-sanctuary we see today.
