Photographer’s Note

From our hosting cottage in Tipperary, we had the luck to have this splendid view of the the mountain so called 'of the women'. Slievenamon is in Gaelic and translates exactly as the mountain of the women.

Being a woman myself i found it exceptionally cool. I never thought that in my life i would ever meet a place simply named after women in general. Call me biased or feminist but i fall in love with this mountain. :)

Yet the name itself tells a story or stories, for the mountain itself is the site for many irish legends and folktales. I am going to share with you the one i heard from an irish man, and that this he story of Finn McCool.

The legend says how Finn unable to choose a bride decided to make a contest among the women. The contest involved a race to the top of Slievenamon. The story teller did not specify who the girl was but he said that it was Finn's favorite and gave her tips how to reach the summit. Another source said that the winner of the race was Gráinne, a figure who would become notorious in Irish folklore.
