Photographer’s Note

Castelnuovo al Volturno is a small country of the high valley of the Volturno, in the common one of Rocchetta, province of Isernia. It is dipped in one of the incontaminate zones more of the National Park of Abruzzi; is situated to the feet of the mount Marrone (1870 meters, in the mountain chain of the Mainarde), particular and evocative mountain of the medium Appennino that, in 1944, it saw the first action of the Italian Liberation Corps. To testimony of the event the National Monument of the Regions of Italy was erected, place to 1300 meters high. Along the road that door to the monument is situated the commemorative stele of the great intellectual and patriot Giaime Pintor, in the place in which, 1° December 1943, lost the life on a mined field, while it tried to cross the forehead in order to catch up a group of partisans in the Lazio. The country was also victim of an absurd episode during the last conflict: in fact it was destroyed for advertising from the guns of the 8° Armed allied in order to allow the Americans to testify the sourness of the combats on the Italian forehead! Castelnuovo al Volturno is moreover earth of being worth zampognari that they renew, from year to year in the christmas period, one long, ancient, uninterrupted tradition. The landscape and the “light of the Mainarde” were the determining elements that pushed Charles Moulin, painter and French naturalist, to choose the Molise's country which second native land and dwelling uninterruptedly accustom them in which it operated, from 1911 in order nearly fifty years, in a fascinating relationship with the nature.
