Photographer’s Note

The Colosseum or Coliseum, originally the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium, Italian Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo), is a giant amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Originally capable of seating around 50,000 spectators, it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. It was built on a site just east of the Roman Forum, with construction starting between 70 and 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian. The amphitheatre, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire, was completed in 80 AD under Titus, with further modifications being made during Domitian's reign.[1]

The Colosseum remained in use for nearly 500 years with the last recorded games being held there as late as the 6th century — well after the traditional date of the fall of Rome in 476. As well as the traditional gladiatorial games, many other public spectacles were held there, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building eventually ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such varied purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry and a Christian shrine.

Although it is now in a severely ruined condition due to damage caused by earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum has long been seen as an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and is one of the finest surviving examples of Roman architecture. It is one of modern Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession to the amphitheatre each Good Friday.

Ciao Giorgio, this is really superb, taken at right time (blue hour) your compo is well chosen with this almost panoramic aspect and dividing the compo in third-half with the colosseum.

che stupenda immagine notturna. La luce blu del crepuscolo contrasta perfettamente e in maniera spettacolare con la luce artificiale dorata. A parte la stupenda illuminazione degli archi, le tre luci a forma di stella sono grandiose.

I have seen many photos of the wonder but I must admit this is one of the best ever. The artificial light over the natural light of the background is excellent. And the stars are just short of the 5 star classification. Well done.

Oh Giorgio!! mi era sfuggita questa tua foto, che vergogna!!
Che bravo a fotografare così bene un soggetto quasi consumato dalle tante immagini.
La luce è formidabile, anche se le stelline nei lampioni non mi esaltano; ma quello che mi easalta è il cielo che si vede oltre agli archi delcolosseo, il colore del cielo, e l'illuminazione degli archi. Nell'insieme i colori sono piacevolissimi, anche per il molto blu che hai lasciato.

There are two things that really strike me .. one is your wonderful light .. it is so much not the typical "historical" image of this place but yet communicates it so well .. and adding to that .. here you have this wonderful point of view and given us an except of the building and communicated it powerfully .. more powerfully than most images of the whole .. a lesson there. The Colosseum, one of the most photographed monuments of the world, but you found a nice and original POV to bring it to us, and against this blue sky, at the blue hour it's even better. I like the way you put it on one side of the photo leaving space to the beautiful sky, the other monument on background and the trees.
The exposure and sharpness of this photo are superb and helps to the success of this photo.

It is a creative composition to frame a small part of the Coliseum, and present it against the pristine graduated blue of the sky. The six-pointed stars created by the streetlights lends a certain mystique. I like tit very much, especially since you've provided a very good note.
