Near Symmetry Photo

Photographer’s Note

I've mentioned before in my posts the view from gasworks park. Well, here it is. Two women were sitting enjoying the view, right in the centre of one of the steps. I liked the symmetry of them and the city beyond and took a photo as I had my camera out to photograph the park (which I haven't posted yet actually).

Decided to go with B&W as the colours weren't particularly inspiring, and the sky didn't look like it really fitted (even though it did because it was there).

It wasn't actually as ominous as this, but the picture felt more balanced if I brought out the detail in the cloud a little more. It's not a huge change, but more than I normally do on my photos. I used curves in PS almost exclusively in this shot.

To further enhance the rather over-dramatic effect of the shot, I've added in more of a pronounced vignette than I normally would. I stopped short of applying a film grain, or printing it out and soaking it in tea :)

I like this a great deal, your work on the sky has given it good interest, and the B&W work superbly, as does the square format. I would perhaps have cropped a centimetre or two from the bottom, as it's a bit wasted, but that's just a thought. Good work.

Hi, really like the fact you have created a square shot here, adds to the interest and your note is very detailed with regards to post processing. The symmetry is great but its the dramatic effect of the clouds which makes this image stand out for me

Hello Robert, the b/w format works well for this shot.
I like the contrast of the horizontal lines of the f/g with the vertical lines of the buildings in the b/g.The sky looks more dramatic in b/w than I imagine it looked in colour.
Excellent piece of work.

This is breathtaking, Robert. Wise choice about the B&W, in a nicely composed and very well-balanced image. Definitely worth a favorite.
