Photographer’s Note
These cactus fences extend for kilometers on end, and they were planted decades ago by goat farmers in the region. The species is Eulychnia acida, and they have fast vegetative growth, which means you can cut and arm, drop it on the ground and in a few years there will be a large cactus in place. Yes, they do work at keeping the goats in, although, because of the serious damage already caused to the region by goats in terms of erosion, the only thing left to be done is to eliminate goat-herding for good. Desertification is a serious issue here, and there are no native goats.
