Photographer’s Note

The flow of water. Taken at the Tamppikoski rapids in Keuruu.

Tamppikoski is located in the village of Lihjamo which belongs to the small town of Keuruu.
Tamppikoski is a small part of a river called Tarhianjoki which used to be a route for floating timber logs. The river was restored to its original state some years ago.

The motion blur or the "slowing" of water has been made with the help of a neutral density filter. It reduces the amount of the light passing through the lens, allowing the photographer to use longer exposure times and/or apply more f-stops.

In this particular picture I used the shutter speed of 2 seconds and the aperture of f8. The flowing water can be easily overexposed so it's important to keep that in mind. Though overexposing can also be used as a special effect and it works well in some pictures. Bracketing is always a good way to get better pictures in situations like this one. A tripod is necessary when using long exposure times.
