Photographer’s Note
Red Rock Canyon is located outside of Las Vegas and is a quiet and pleasant place, the perfect getaway from the sensory assault that is experienced when visiting Las Vegas.
Driving about 15 minutes away from Las Vegas the scenery becomes calm and absolutely gorgeous. The rock formations are visible, there’s very little noise other than that made by nature and the air smells better, however it feels even hotter than Vegas.
Although I have visited the city of sin before this was my first visit to RRC and it was beautiful, we hiked for a little bit (the heat got to us quickly we’re used to cool ocean breezes) and saw beautiful cacti and even a few tortoises.
More info on this area can be found in http://www.nv.blm.gov/redrockcanyon/ and http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/.
I must add that this was taken with a new camera and I’m still learning it. After several years of use and abuse I dropped and broke my beloved Olympus 770UZ. Photo cropped, contrast adjusted and sharpened. I am not accustomed to this crazy sunshine and used the polorizer filter but I'm not too certain about the results.

Yeah, not the plant I would enjoy falling over on. Interesting torns in this minimalist composition. The contrast of colours in the background is very nice. The red cliff is very interesting. Well composed image with good exposure and nice details. Thanks Cristina.

Oi Cristina,

Nice close up of this cactus, which I will surely not touch, and a well chosen title.
All the best,
Emmanuel

though a bit out of focus, the "point" is well seencristina. I've crossed paths with these before and one is well advised to keep clear... in fact.. it makes me a bit nervous just looking.

Hi Cristina
Interesting variety of cactus well illuminated by the sunlight showing nicely its big thorns! I like its texture and the blurred BG giving more impact to the thorny plant. Luminosity and colors are great too.
Cheers

Cristina,
OUCH, that was exactly my first feeling when I saw this image even as a thumbnail. The shallow DOF contributes for a very good presentation of these thorns. It gives an enhanced feeling for the contrast between the cactus and surrounding warm colors.

I can see you are showing things from Nevada. I've been there and I can see beautiful mountains and some plants like this one you show. Very nice. Sothy

Hi Christina,
Amazing sharpness in the cactus, while good DOF gives a great colors in the BG in a non-competitive way.
The strong colors in the BG look like you used the polarizer effectively; 90 degree angle to the light is supposed to be best.
Hope all is well with you, I'm guessing you're just too busy with other, hopefully fun, things to have time to take pictures!!
