Photographer’s Note
I took this photo last January, in a holiday travel to Merida state, Venezuela
This was one of my first attempts to do night photography, the temperature there was about 0 centigrades, -a very unusual temperature here, only found in this heights of the Andean chain mountains- and there were also strong wings, which made really hard for me to stay out there the seconds needed to take the shot.
Taken with tripod, about 8 pm.
Shutter speed: 10 seconds.
Some crop, noise reduced and resized for TE.
Llano del Hato National Astronomical Observatory
(Observatorio Nacional de Llano del Hato) is an observatory in Venezuela, run by the Centro de Investigaciones de Astronomia (CIDA). It is 3600 metres above sea level, -which makes it one of the highest observatories in the world-, and comprises four telescopes, each in their own cupola: a Schmidt camera (the 4th. greatest of the world), a reflecting telescope , a great refractor, and a double astrograph.
It is the main observatory in Venezuela. It is situated above the village of Llano del Hato close to Apartaderos in the Venezuelan Andes, about 50 kilometres north-east of Merida City, Merida State.
This facility is the closest major observatory to the equator. It has access to large parts of both the northern and southern skies. It benefits from very dark skies and its altitude of 3,600 metres (12,000 feet) above sea level means atmospheric turbulence is greatly reduced.
The facility has four large optical telescopes, a Zeiss refractor, a large Zeiss reflector and, for dedicated photographic applications, an Askania astrograph and an Askania Schmidt camera. These instruments were acquired by the Venezuelan government 1954 and installed at Llano del Hato in the early 1970s.
There is also a museum and exhibition centre where visitors can learn about the work of the observatory and CIDA as well as astronomy in general.

Hi Jose
I like the compo in your picture, as well as the colours of the domes. What a pity that it is not sharp, even though the use of a tripod, but reading your note, I understand that the conditions were not easy.
It is worth a post anyway. Interesting note also,
Best regards,

Hi Jose
I`m impressed about the view. Great capture of the telescopes illuminated by the Moon. A little pity that it`s unsharp (from shivering or bad focusing?). Amazing place to watch the night sky...

Hi Jose,
interesting shot,and your note too.
I think the strong wings and the 0° made your photo a bit unsharp, but for all that,it's a very good composition.

A very nice moon and in overall a good sharpness even if there is some potential improvement (but night pictures need some tests, I remeber my first tries last sumer without a tripod...). I like the light blue grey of the sky here (probably thanks to the moon light) and the well lighted clouds.
All the best,
Emmanuel

Hola Jose Miguel,

Hi Jose Miguel, I like the composition of this difficult shot of yours where you have set up a triangular effect between the two domes and the moon. Even though it is dark you have picked up some decent cloud cover and stars, though the moon may be a bit over exposed. I was curious to see what it would be like if it was darker, i.e. without the blue sky, more like we might see with our eye and with a little more contrast. I have prepared a workshop to look at this and to provide you with another option.

Hola Jose Miguel:
Una composición muy buena un cielo espectacular, lástima la definición, pero me imagino que tuviste que tomar la foto a mucha distancia empleando el zoom y de ahí que saliera algo borrosa, pero a pesar de todo es una buena foto.

Hello José,
As a physicist, I've known about the observatory in Venezuela that has given us remarkable images of the southern sky. I am happy to see the photo here on Trekearth. It's a good hand-held images in those inclements conditions. I've learned the hardway, however, to carry a tripod (or as some very good photographers on TE do) a monopod, precisely for slow exposure in these conditions. Thanks for shring this photo with us,
Bulent

Hello Jose Miguel,
this one does not work for me. Composition is superb and the idea is very nice with the observatories and the moon and stars. However, I don't think that the quality is good enough to appreciate the view. Maybe the wind was too strong and your tripod moved...Maybe it was too cold and your finger made the camera move when you pressed the shutter...I don't know.
I would lke so much that you post more often...you seem to have a good potential.
Have a nice day,
Marc

Hi Jose,
It’s me again... :-D)
Okay, on this one, way too much shaky to offer proper results... The sky might not be that bad, but both observatories are impossible to recuperate with pp sharpening. The reason why you have a better sky than structures, is that objects closer to you will always suffer more than the ones far away.
So here’s my advice: First, make sure your tripod’s legs are stable. You can put rocks around the legs to improve the stability. If you have a central column, don’t extend it because this is where you’re going to lose stability.
If you have a shutter release, it’s imperative to use it. If you don’t have one, use your self timer mode, so you won’t shake your camera when you’re going to press the shutter. And last thing, but very important, look in your menu and find out if you have a function called "Mirror Lock-Up". It will avoid a vibration of the camera coming from your mirror, when it closed to let the light coming in.
Also, keep in mind that you have to shoot while there’s still some colours in the sky, like 15 to 25 minutes before it becomes pitch dark. This way, you’ll get a smooth blue sky that will allows you to use a shorter exposure, therefore reducing the chance of shaking. The colours results will also be much superior... You might have read about it on this site, but this is what we call the "Blue Hour" or the "Magic Hour". The first time you’re going to see the result, you’ll get all excited by the beauty of it. Ideally, your scene should have some artificial light source, light lamp post on the side of a wall, or spotlight on a structure. When you achieve a good balance between natural and artificial light, you’ll get very addicted...
And remember, you can only make some minor improvement when sharpening on your computer. When you have a very blurry photo, PP can’t do magic and correct strong lens blur.
Enjoy the blue hour Jose! You’ll get a lot of fun!

Hey Jose,
It could have gotten the perfect score if it wasn't for the blurry focusing! Reading your notes I'm saying that despite having your camera on a tripod the harsh winds vibrated the stability. I had an experience once taking shots on difficult weather, I had to cover/protect my camera and tripod with my jacket or placed my body on its side to lessen the 'drag' of the wind. Also a timer/switch can help reduce the 'shake' when you push the shutter down of your camera even on a tripod.
I'll give you the best smiley on composition and given the POV it's worth the shot!
Good attempt, see more of your images here in TE!
Best Regards,
Jom

Hi Jose Miguel,
Sure, as several people wrote here, we can regret that the observatory is blur. But if we make abstraction of that, it's a remarkable shot. And beyond of that, I can imagine the sensations that we can feel during taking this kind og picture. I have always been passionnate by astronomy and I can imagine the sensation to be at 3600 meters of altitude, at night with a very low temperature, in front of a magnificent moon in a pure sky, without the city lights, and this kind of observatory. You had luck.
Olivier.

Hi Jose, not a bad result for a first attempt. The best piece of advice I can give would be to make sure you use a small aperture, f8 or smaller. And a low ISO. The exposure time will be a lot longer - but if you have a sturdy tripod the results should be a lot cleaner and sharper.
Best regards, Roberto
