I think this was one time where more DOF would have been a big help. You've got pretty good focusing on the base of the beak but the bird's shoulder is badly out of focus.
You might try cropping down to more of a head shot and using some hard sharpening to make the details more distinct.

I like the DOF. But i am a birder myself, and a shot like this i got from a kingfisher, and it seems you were holding it in your hand, that is why you got this expresion. Birds that are being holt are stressed, so they are always keeping their beeks opened. Belive me, i have some experience in ringing birds. Anyway, i like you shot.
