Photographer’s Note
Located near the Arizona-Utah border within the Navajo Nation, just north of Kayenta, Arizona, is Monument Valley, home of some of the most recognized natural rock formations in the Southwest USA.
In this picture, the East Mitten Butte appears dwarfed by a Juniper tree in the foreground. This photo was taken from the Wildcat Trail, a 3.3-mile hike that encircles the West Mitten Butte.
The soil consists primarily of reddish-colored sand, the weathered remnants of the buttes and mesas that populate this scenic region.
When seen side by side, the East and West Mitten buttes resemble two hands raised to the sky.
