Photographer’s Note

On what to Americans is referred to as D-Day, the date of the invasion at Normandy sixty years ago, I decided to visit Fort Baker on the shore of San Francisco Bay immediately to the east of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Fort has been included in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to the public. The site offers dramatic views of the bridge, the bay, San Franciso to the south and Alcatraz to the east. I'll likely post a number of images from my rambling that day. It is also a favorite with local fishermen and women.

My nature being what it is, however, I chose not to post one of the grand vistas to be captured along the shore, but an image I nearly stumbled over as I walked past the retired and tired shed that houses the Presidio Yacht Club. Adjacent to the club is a workshop in which boat repairs are done. The steel track running between these well worn boards is one of a pair used to transport vessels lifted from the harbor serving the Fort to the workshop. I looked down and there it was. Perhaps I'll never post another beautiful vista, since my eye eternally seeks out these small pieces of the world we inhabit. Only time will tell... ;-)

For anyone interested in Fort Baker, I've included the following link. Enjoy!
