PORTAL III — BISHOP’S GARDEN

In my short series, “Portals,” I previously presented the doorways to a pair of great architectural edifices. The present photo reveals a minor portal, the entrance to the Bishop’s Rose Garden at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. I submit this shot only for its inherent beauty, in a manner evocative of photos by TE-friends, Kath Featherstone (feather) and Jaap Polak (carper).

The National Cathedral itself is a prepossessing architectural marvel that took the better part of the 20th century to build, and was previously posted with an extensive history. In “Portal II,” the extraordinarily powerful carving by Frederick Hart, Ex Nihilo, was seen and that too was accompanied by comprehensive narrative.

In this photo, Portal III, the subject is the semi-circular stone arch, carved in the Norman Style that frequently characterized medieval architecture of France and England. The opening allows a view of the rose garden, and the roof of the octagonal gazebo in the garden. The geometric patterns in the carving, illuminated by the sunlight striking from a grazing angle, I thought, were especially compelling. The trees were just assuming the new season’s mantle of foliage, and would be in full bloom in a week or two. For visitors to Washington, DC, I would recommend highly a visit to the National Cathedral. Unlike any other religious building in the world, one of the stained glass windows of this cathedral has embedded in it a moon rock, brought back by astronauts from the moon.

Nikon D70, 18-70mm lens, tripod.

Merhaba,
More interesting corners of architecture that I seem to have missed in all those years in VA. Great light and careful framing make for a nice image. Enjoyed the note too. Look forward to viewing more...
Selamlar,
Hakan

Hello, Bulent,
What a beautiful shot. It is a really nice subject, but the light and the framing of the tree branches add a great deal to the beauty. Wonderful detail and I love the lights and shadows. This is wonderful. Warm regards,
Shelly

Hi Bulent, Another great piece of architecture & the POV is excellent, very good light picking up the detail on the right side & great framing, kind regards Wilson.

Hi Bulent. A majestic archway well captured with clarity. The eye is drawn through by the slate roof beyond. A well chosen POV. The designer and builders of this did a great job. It would also be good in spring with new leaves over the entrance. TFS. Murray.

Thank you very much for the mention. I am honoured that some of my work has influenced you in some way to post this lovely image.
The light is beautiful, especially the way the golden tones are illuminating the left of the archway, where the contrast on the decoration is perfect. The spring foliage is just enough to frame the arch; in a few weeks it will probably obscure it.
Good work.
Kath

hello bulent,
the beautiful golden light and the natural framing serve perfectly to present us the portal to the Bishop's Garden. Am sure that everything that can be found after entering this portal is just as beautiful.
thank you for sharing,

Hello. You know I think I have a picture just like this but I sure don't have light that good. You've got a good amount of symmetry. It's too bad you didn't have any leaves yet as that would have been a good addition. The interplay of light and shadows is the highlight of this picture for me. Super shot Bulent!

Merhaba Hocam,
Bakış açınız, ışık ve gölge ile nefis bir kompozisyon oluşturmuşsunuz. Selamlar, saygılar.

Another well composed image (and note) - TFS :)

Hello Bulent Bey,
The use of light, the framing, and the soft colors of the afternoon light is what impresses me. The sense of depth also very nicely seen thru the arch. The details, and the colors
are superb.
Best personal regards. Salvator.

Beautiful light you go on this great piece of architecture. I love the tree on top of the arch, it makes your overall composition so well balanced. A great pleasure to the eyes.

Hello Bulent,
you have captured this one to perfection, nice warm colour range, there is just enough details in the background so that it does not distract the viewer from this amazing portal. What more can I say? One cannot add to perfection.
Warm Regards.

Hi Bülent,

very good shot! The light is very nice for this composition, and I like the fact that we see this nice little building in the greenery through the gate! Good sharpness, too.

At which time did you take the photo?

A very nice portal, well detailed by a well done photo! Good frame and colors, too.
An interesting note, Bulent!

Merhaba Bülent,
Very nice view of this beautiful, if anachronic, Romanesque piece. The light, colours and that tree branch covering it adds much charm. Before I noticed the location, I thought it had been shot in England. Those Americans and their fascination with Medieval Age... :-)
Very interesting and informative note, as usual.

Hello Bulent,

Congratulation my friend, you used a tripod, alone I know nothing about your ISO and your exposure.
This portal is absolutely attractive for looking, I can enjoy the white stone construction, also the sunlight to the left gives a very nice composition.
I should trying the through look, a little bit more clarity to giving.
Thanks for sharing and the book.

I wish you a nice weekend,
John.

Merhaba Bulent!

Excellent framing and composition once again! I like how that tree seems to embrace the portal. Beautiful evening colours! Congratulations!

Hi Bülent,

A photograph always accompanied by an informative note worthy of interest. The image of this stone gate is very good, I like much the light which gives shades interesting and a relief with the architecture which one would not imagine in Washington. Pretty work, cheer Bülent.

Bonjour, mon ami Bulent,

Hi Bulent,

This is a nice simple picture, showing great architectural view. Nice light and well framed. What attracts my eyes the most is the pleasant light in the photo, giving great focus only on the gate.

Hi Bulent,

I really like this one .. I love the light .. I love the geometric relationship of the triangular and pyramid shapes in the inner arch to the gazebo? on the interior .. all of that against the natural progression of the tree that watches over the whole place.

Wonderful.

take care,

John

It's beautiful lighting,wonderful shot.

Hello Bulent,

I don't think I've seen such intricate and varied carvings on one portal before. You've caught the light perfectly but, because I'm a fan of doors, especially old wooden ones, I would have liked to have seen more of the door itself. However, that's a personal view and it doesn't detract from the fact that it's a fine capture of a beautiful piece of stonework my friend and as usual a wonderful, informative note.

Warm regards

Stephen

Hello bulent
I specially like this picture for the nice light from end of the day. Perhaps the picture could have been a little more sharp. But I like the picture also because I find here three of my favorite elements : light / stones / tree.
One additionnal remark : the frame with same dominent colours than in the picture is for me more distractive than attractive because the eyes cannot avoid it : you want to look the picture and your eyes are attarcted by the frame (of course, personnal point of view).
Best regards
JMarc

Hi Bulent,
Beautiful soft light adorns this magnificent arch that you have captured in strong clear colors and fine details. Lovely shadows are seen on the arch as we peek into the wonderful garden.
Regards, Tom

Hello Bülent - very nice detail, the weeping (cherry?) tree adds the right touch, good light, I also like the peek-a-boo view of the conical roof under the arch, it must look even better when the trees are in bloom. I have mixed feelings about the capuccino frame, the ochre matches the color of the stone, but layer within layer it's a bit too elaborate.

Merhaba Bulent. I love the gravitas and elegance in this shot. Beautifully controlled light enriches the forms and plays with shadows. The tree seems to loom protectively over the arch, caressing it with its branches. Evocative and as you say, inherently beautiful. Selamlar. Klaudio.
