...and this is a gate of the Hikone Castle.

In 1603, a war-lord Ieyasu Tokugawa reunified whole nation and was appointed as shogun by Emperor Go-Yozei. It was the begining of Tokugawa Shogunate regeme.

In Japan the emperors have reigned, but don't govern from 12th century. To 19th century, the nation was governed by military leaders from samurai class. Emperor appoints the chief of samurai as the SHOGUN, the supreme general. And the shogun forms his government, shogunate(Japanese:bakufu/幕府).

There were three shogunates in Japanese history. Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1867) was the last, and the most forceful one. Its headquater was at Edo (today's Tokyo) and completely controlled other clans and the imperial court in Kyoto.

To control West Japanese clans and the imperial court, Hikone was a geopolitically important place. So Shogun Ieyasu appointed his confidant Naomasa Ii as the first load of Hikone. And Naomasa constructed his castle that is one of the most beautiful castles in Japan.

A building in the left of this picture is Tenbin-Yagura, a castle gate with a high bridge. You will note how the gate is strong with high stone wall.

Hallo Keitaro!
What a building! Safe like Fort Knox! I think these walls were unconquerable in those days. In combination with your note a very good work in the sense of TrekEarth! Thank you, I've learnt a lot!
Greetings from Germany!
Frank
