The children of the Sea Bajaus in most of the islands off the coast, between Kunak and Tawau are stateless. Stateless is a demographic term which defines a person as having no geographic state from which he or she originated from.
The children you see in the photo, are children from an island called Maiga. Technically they are not Malaysian, even though they were born and raised on Malaysian soil/water. The Malaysian government doesn't recognize them as citizen. So are the other two neighboring governments.
With no citizenship, they therefore have no education, medical and employment benefits, making them totally hopeless on land.
Just like their fathers, grandfathers and forefathers, these young Sea Bajaus will continue living off and living on the sea.

This is really a dynamic shot and a fun picture! Really close shave at the top but I like the picture. Well done. Salam. Latiff.

You've done a great job capturing the fun, happy atmosphere in this photo. From the splashes, to the two smiling girls looking at the camera to the boy in the air. They all combine to create an amazing photo. The colour of the water is gorgeous, and you can see how crystal clear it is. The note is also very informative.
One of my favourites.

R: maybe your absoulte finest motion image (and you know what I mean). This one rocks! You've caught it all here with your willing friends... all the best, c

I love your picture. The joy and laughter is so evident it is infectious. And though your note may in a way be sad? Perhaps they are better off than many, eh?? The water looks fine, I almost envy them. Beautiful shot and good note. Kind regards,

Beautiful picture and a great note. Despite the bad place these kids are in economical-wise, they still are able to go out, have fun, with huge smiles on their faces. Love the action that you caught, and the colors are supurb.

Hi Rabani. These children seem totally upset about not having any official citizenship. (NOT!!!) Excellent photo, not one sad face. Perfect timing, great colour and well composed. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, such an amazing shot! Amazing capture of the moment, and great colours. Love how its all the children together that truly make the shot. Thanks for providing that information... knowing the story of these children, truly makes you appreciate the picture and the children so much more. It's amazing that they can still be so happy, when they are living in such poor conditions... i think many of us can learn a great deal from these children. Thanks. Kind Regards, Carolyne

What a great shot...very spontaneous. You have captured it in a right moment, I like the boy at the top, he is like a big embrio. But unfortunately you have cropped it too close almost cut his head. Anyway very well done.

it's a strange and unfortunate story you're writing here, one which proves once again how stupid man made laws can be.
even though they have no citizenship they do have life in them ... and obviously lots of it - beautifully captured dynamic moments of laughters, jumps and true happiness!

Hi Bani. This is such a lovely and joyful photo of the kids enjoying to play in the refreshing water. The smiling faces are very engaging, the splashing water droplets increase the dynamic, and of course the little guy in mid-air is the icing on the cake. Great shot.

Je trouve ta photo extraordinaire ! Un instant de pur bonheur apparamment pour ces enfants. Le gros plus de cette photo est constitué par les deux enfants du centre, surtout le petit ! La couleur de l'eau est super aussi. Une note très intéressante.

the situation for them isn't easy but for sure they have a lot of fun.
The kids are well positioned in the picture, good timing for the one in the sky.

Bravo, what a ton of fun exploding in that picture, splashing off the frame literally. I love the tones, yet, at the very minute I saw it, I instantly saw it in B&W as well. So i did a WS. Many Hilltribe kids in Thailand are a bit in the same situation as them, such as the ones in my last post. Thanks, Rabani, glad to drop by to see such work.

A situation that we can only ... imagine. One of my concerns about Bajau people, is that the ressources from the sea are poorer and poorer and they cannot fight in the competition of the heavy fishing practices... Pollution and lack of ressources could become a great danger for them in the near future.
Your photo illustrates the very strong and intimate link of Bajau people with the ocean's life. Your shot is full of joy and spontaneity. Congratulations

Hi Rabani, good capture of this kid flying in mid air. I love the smiles on those little faces as they were really enjoying themselves.
I guess during that moment, none of them would remember or think of the issue raised by you in the note.
I just don't understand why no countries wanted to recognise them. Perhaps lack of "black gold" in these islands and no one is interested ?
teutza (10590) 2007-05-08 15:00
that's a real joy out there!well i'd be as happy as they are if i can be in that amasing water:)
sarju (5324) 2007-05-12 0:03
wow .. this photo seems to be overflowing with action and drama ... but it is the appeal to the child in us that reallly pulls us to the photo + Lovely waters.
We really don't need money to be happy ... happiness is something that originates from within.
thanks for sharing this profound photo
cheers ... sarju

Wonderful photo! I love the colour of the water, it sets off the children so well.
I also found that joy amongst poverty in my travels in Mexico and China. Unhappy, well off people can learn from that.
