Excellent work Tracey, he really stands out against the dark background. Good, natural tones and a fine composition. I'm in two minds about the crop, initially that is what drew me to it, but having studied it a little longer it may be a little to hard. Maybe you could post the uncropped version as a workshop. I like the format of this picture, as panoramic. The black background is great and permit to see very well this man. But I beleave that you've cut too much on the top. I'll prefer to see a bit more of his face with their eyes in the middle.

Hello Tracey,

What a superb portait of the older gentleman. I like the panoramic format with a black backdrop to the man's visage. The composition, perspective, light and dark, the colors and the definition are all flawless. I just read your Intro page, and rather than comment on your latest post (I'll do that in the near future), I'll add a few words to this superb shot.

In a book I wrote, 'Math and the Mona Lisa,' about the intersection of mathematics, the sciences and art, Leonardo is the foil. Quite simply the finest artist-scientist in history, could never separate his art and his scientific passions. In a chapter called 'Eye of the Beholder, the Eye of the Beheld,' I wrote about a 1998 discovery by Christopher Tyler, an English born neurophysiologist living in San Francisco. He found that in almost all great portraits (from Leonardo's three miraculous portraits of women, in all of Rembrandt's magical pyschological portraits, even in Picasso's 'Dora Maar') that a vertical line that bisects the canvas passes right through, or very near, one eye. You were entirely correct in putting this man off on the side, it is far more compelling than if he had appeared in the center.

Beautiful portrait - and personally I like this crop the best - it's a great use of the "panoramic" format, and contains far more "mystery and imagination" than the full frame shot.

Really good portrait shotTracey. The composition and panoramic format reaaly wotk weel together and the color pallette of black, white and brown look great. I wish it were a bit sharper but other than that it is really, really good.
